Woodsom Farm in Amesbury with your dog: fields, the Powow River and the leash law
Woodsom Farm is meadow, wetland and woods that Amesbury bought in 1989 to stop a housing development and declared a city park in 2019. It is also one of the busiest open spaces in the city, shared with soccer, model aircraft, horses and sleds. This page sorts out the leash question, the two parking areas off Lion's Mouth Road, the river and the other users.
The rule
No dog rule on the Woodsom page, so the by-law's six-foot leash applies
The city's Woodsom Farm page lists dog walking first among its popular uses, ahead of sledding, hiking and organized events, and it posts no specific rule for dogs. That does not make it an off-leash field. Amesbury's animal control by-law, linked from the city's Animal Control page, says a dog away from its owner's premises must be restrained by a chain or leash no longer than six feet, unless it is on another person's land with permission. A city park is public land, so the leash applies.
The Animal Control page says the animal control officer takes complaints about leash and restraint laws, pet waste and licensing, and may educate, warn or cite. Under the by-law, letting a dog run at large costs $10 for a first offense within a year and $25 for each one after that in the same year, and owners must pick up after a dog in parks and other public areas. Plan on the leash and on carrying bags.
- No dog rule posted on the Woodsom page itself
- By-law: chain or leash of six feet or less off your premises
- Dog at large: $10, then $25 within the same year
- Pick up after your dog in parks, as the by-law requires
Parking
Two parking areas off Lion's Mouth Road, with porta-potties at the soccer-fields lot
Follow Lion's Mouth Road from downtown; the city lists the farm at 211 Lions Mouth Road. For Woodsom South, parking is on the left at the very beginning of the open field. For Woodsom North and the soccer fields, look for an unsigned driveway on the right at a crosswalk and follow it to the end, where the lot has porta-potties. Neighbors also come in from trailheads on Whitehall Road and Woodsom Drive.
Choose the lot by the walk you want. The soccer-fields lot is the start of the main trail to the river, so it is the one for a swim day. When games are on, players and families fill the fields and the lot, so leash up before the hatch opens and walk your dog away from the sidelines before heading for the trail. Bring water for the walk back; the city's page lists none.
- 01
Drive out Lion's Mouth Road from downtown Amesbury
- 02
For the river, take the unsigned driveway on the right at the crosswalk to the soccer-fields lot
- 03
Clip on a leash of six feet or less before opening the door
- 04
Walk the main trail from the lot to the Powow River
- 05
If your dog swims, keep the leash on and stay at the water's edge
- 06
Towel off at the car and check for ticks before the drive home
The river
The main trail ends at a Powow River swimming hole that dogs and people share
The Powow River forms the farm's western border, and the city's page is unusually direct about it: follow the main trail from the soccer-fields lot to a swimming hole where dogs and people can often be found taking a dip. Kayakers reach the same spot by paddling 3.8 miles upriver from Lake Gardner beach. Expect company on a hot day, and keep a wet, excited dog from shaking off beside somebody's picnic.
A river swim is a fresh judgment each time. Look at the water before your dog goes in: after heavy rain a river runs faster and muddier, and a dog on a leash in current is hard to manage from the bank. Keep the leash on, stay at the edge and let your dog choose how deep to go. If your dog is unwell after a swim or after drinking river water, call your vet and tell them where it swam.
Sharing the fields
Soccer, sleds, horses and model aircraft: Woodsom's other users
The city's list of what happens at Woodsom reads like a county fair: soccer, cross-country running, cyclocross training, mountain biking, horseback riding, kayaking, berry picking, sledding, snowkiting, model rocket launching, model aircraft flying, drone racing and paramotoring, along with walking and picnicking. Unauthorized motorized vehicles are prohibited. For a dog, that means things that fly, things that roll and things that gallop, and any of them can start a chase.
Read the field when you arrive. If drones or model aircraft are up, choose a route that keeps your distance, because a buzzing shape overhead unsettles many dogs. Give horses the trail and give bikes room on narrow stretches. In winter the slopes fill with sledders, and a dog in a sledding lane is a hazard to children and to itself. Ticks are the quiet risk in the meadow grass; the CDC advises checking pets after time outdoors.
- Drones and model aircraft overhead: keep your distance
- Horses: step aside and let them pass
- Winter: stay out of the sledding lanes
- Meadow grass: a tick check before the car
After the swim
River water and meadow mud: a bath at 210 Eastern Ave
A Powow River dog gets home wet to the skin and usually muddy to the elbows. Our bath and brush washes, dries and brushes out the coat, priced by size from $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds to $85 over 90 pounds and $95 for an extra-large long coat. Grooming needs no evaluation. Add a nail trim for $16, or Shed Release for $10 for a double coat that holds the river for hours.
Amesbury is outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up or drive down to Gloucester. A dog that has done its free evaluation can spend a $42 daycare day in a matched playgroup and have its bath before you collect it. We never take dogs to Woodsom Farm or its river; the swim is your outing, and the towel and dryer work can be ours.
