Willowdale State Forest with your dog: Ipswich's long miles
When a Cape Ann dog has done every loop at Ravenswood twice, Willowdale is where the miles are. It is a state forest, which means DCR rules and DCR maps, and it is far enough from Gloucester that the trip needs a plan. Here is the plan, what distance asks of a dog, and where we fit when you get back.
The forest
A DCR state forest in Ipswich: read the mass.gov page, then plan for distance
Willowdale belongs to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and DCR publishes the forest's rules, maps, alerts and any seasonal closures on its mass.gov location page. That page is the rule at the time of writing, and it outranks anything on this one. Read it the morning you go, because DCR posts closures and trail advisories there first.
What makes Willowdale different from the Cape Ann walks is scale. The forest is big enough that a wrong turn adds real distance, which is a feature for a fit dog and a problem for a puppy or a senior. Carry the map on your phone, note the junctions as you pass them, and decide the turnaround point before you leave the car.
Ipswich also has Crane Beach, which takes leashed dogs from October 1 to March 31 under The Trustees' dog guidelines, so a winter Saturday can be forest in the morning and sand in the afternoon. In summer the forest is the shaded half of that pair, and the beach stays closed to dogs until the fall, so the trees do all the work.

What it asks
Long miles ask for fitness, pads, water and a leash that stays loose
A dog that walks 20 minutes around the block is not conditioned for a two-hour forest loop, any more than you are. Build up over a few weeks: longer street walks, then a short trail, then the long one. Watch the pads afterwards. Gravel and roots wear soft pads raw on a dog that spends its days on turf and carpet, and a limp on the way back means the distance was too much.
Water goes with you. A dog drinks more on a long walk than most people expect, and a stream in a state forest is not a drinking fountain: standing water can carry leptospirosis, which the AVMA covers plainly, and the safer habit is a collapsible bowl and a bottle from home. Keep the leash loose by stopping when it tightens.
Whatever DCR asks of dogs on its page, a leash is the practical choice in a forest this size. It keeps the dog with you at junctions, out of the water you did not choose, and away from the wildlife that shares the trails at dawn and dusk. How Dogtown fits

A Willowdale day means a muddy dog in the car for the drive back to Cape Ann. Book a bath at Dogtown for the next morning: $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds, $65 for 26 to 50, $75 for 51 to 90, $85 above 90 and $95 for an extra-large long coat, with a warm wash, blow-dry and brush-out. There is no evaluation for grooming. From April to November ask our groomers for a tick check; two hours of undergrowth is how a dog comes in with one attached.
The day after a long loop is a rest day, and a rest day with a bored dog is not restful. A half day of daycare at $33 gives a sore dog company and a settle without another long walk, or add the sniff room for $7 and a lick mat for $5 on a daycare day. Dogs new to us do the free evaluation first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current town license.
On the weeks the forest is out of reach, our at-home walks keep the fitness up: 20 minutes for $25, 30 for $35 or 60 for $55, solo, from your own door, with a photo and a note afterwards. Crane Beach is the Ipswich winter beach for leashed dogs, October 1 to March 31. Back on Cape Ann, Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester and the 3,600 acres of Dogtown Common are the woodland walks that fit a weeknight.
Halibut Point State Park in Rockport is the DCR park that is actually on Cape Ann; it requires a leash and it is a quarry-rim walk rather than a forest, so it is the closer place to practice the leash habit before a Willowdale day.
