Topsfield Fair

Are dogs allowed at the Topsfield Fair?

The Topsfield Fair is the big October outing for North Shore families, and it answers the dog question in a single line. Here is that line, what it means for service dogs, why the parked car is no fallback, and a fair-day plan for a dog who spends the day at home or with us in Gloucester.

The fair's rule

The fair allows guide dogs and dogs in its events, and no pet dogs

The Topsfield Fair answers the question on its FAIRly Common Questions page, under the heading Dogs at the Fair: "We love dogs but the only ones we can allow on the Fairgrounds during fair time are guide dogs and those participating in events, e.g., Police K-9 demonstrations, Dock Dogs events, etc." At the time of writing that is the whole published policy. The page lists no small-dog exception and no carrier rule, so a dog in a bag or a stroller is still a dog on the fairgrounds.

The dogs you will see at the fair are working or competing. The same page says the State Police K-9 Unit and the Essex County Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit hold canine demonstrations through the weekends, and those dogs arrive with their handlers as part of the show. Notice the words during fair time as well. The rule is written for the fair itself, so another event held at the Topsfield fairgrounds later in the year sets its own policy, and that event's page is the one to check.

  • Pet dogs: not allowed on the fairgrounds while the fair is running
  • Guide dogs: allowed, in the fair's own wording
  • Event dogs: police K-9 demonstrations and Dock Dogs, with their handlers
  • Questions about your own dog: the fair office at 978-887-5000

Service dogs

Guide dogs are named; for any other service dog, call the fair before you go

The fair's sentence names guide dogs, the dogs that lead people who are blind or have low vision. Federal guidance draws the line more widely. The ADA's service animal page defines service animals as dogs individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability, which covers a dog trained to detect the onset of a seizure as well as a guide dog. The same page says dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals.

If you rely on a service dog that is not a guide dog, call the fair office before your visit rather than settling it at the security checkpoint. Under the ADA guidance, staff may ask only whether the dog is required because of a disability and what work or task it has been trained to perform. A service dog must be harnessed, leashed or tethered unless that interferes with its work or the handler's disability prevents it. This is general information, not legal advice for a particular case.

  • Service dog: individually trained to do a task for a person with a disability
  • Emotional support dog: not a service animal under the ADA
  • Staff may ask two things: is it needed for a disability, and what task it does
  • Harness, leash or tether, unless that gets in the way of the task

The parking lot

The car is not a kennel, even on a cool October day

With pet dogs barred from the gates, some families plan to leave the dog in the car and check on it between barns. Massachusetts law closes that door. Chapter 140, section 174F says a person shall not confine an animal in a motor vehicle in a manner that could reasonably be expected to threaten its health through extreme heat or cold, and it lets animal control officers, police and firefighters enter the car to get the animal out. A first offense carries a civil fine of up to $150.

October does not make a parked car safe. The AKC notes that on a 70-degree day the inside of a car can reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit in 20 minutes, and that a car with the windows cracked heats at almost the same rate as one shut tight. Fair parking adds distance: the lots sit along Route 1 and Route 97 at $15 in every fair lot, and on weekends and the holiday the overflow lot is at Fair-View Farm on Route 1 North, a shuttle ride from the gates.

Checking on a dog also costs you time at the gate. The fair allows re-entry on the same day only with a hand stamp, and you go back through the security checkpoint, where everyone's bags are checked. Admission gates close two hours before the scheduled closing time, so a late dash to the car can end the visit for the whole family.

Fair day plan

Plan the fair day around Dogtown's windows, not the fair's closing time

The fair keeps long hours and Dogtown keeps fixed windows, so match them before you buy tickets. On the 2026 schedule the gates opened at 10 or 11 AM on most days and at 4 PM on opening Friday, and the fair ran until 8, 9 or 10 PM. Our weekday drop-off runs 6:30 to 9:30 AM with pick-up from 4 to 6:30 PM; Saturday runs 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. A daytime visit fits a full day at $42, and an evening at the fair fits an overnight stay at $78.

Sunday is the snag. Dogtown is closed for daycare on Sundays and open only for overnight-stay drop-off and pick-up, from 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, so a Sunday at the fair means booking Saturday night in a suite. The fair's last day in 2026 is Monday, October 12, a holiday, and we do not publish holiday hours here, so ask the front desk about that Monday before you plan around it.

Staying home

If your dog stays home, a tired morning and a quiet room do most of the work

Plenty of dogs are fine at home for a fair afternoon if the morning was busy. A long walk before you leave, a frozen Kong or a lick mat, and a room away from the front door cover most of it. For a whole day out, our at-home walks fill the middle: 20 minutes for $25, 30 minutes for $35 or an hour for $55, with a photo and a note after each one. Walks need the evaluation too, and our walkers do not reach every address, so ask us whether we cover yours.

If you live near the fairgrounds, remember that Topsfield is outside the Pup Van towns, which are Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way, so ask us about pick-up rather than assuming it. Early October is also when Gloucester's beaches reopen to dogs after the summer ban, so a dog who misses the fair still gets the better outing: an hour on the sand first, then a long nap while you look at the giant pumpkins.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can I bring my dog to the Topsfield Fair?
No, unless it is a guide dog or a dog taking part in a fair event. The fair's FAQ says those are the only dogs it can allow on the fairgrounds during fair time, and it names police K-9 demonstrations and Dock Dogs events as examples. Small dogs, dogs in carriers and dogs in strollers are not listed as exceptions, so plan for your pet to stay home or at daycare.
Is an emotional support dog allowed at the Topsfield Fair?
The fair's rule names guide dogs, and the ADA guidance says dogs whose only job is comfort or emotional support are not service animals. If your dog is trained to do a specific task for a disability but is not a guide dog, call the fair office at 978-887-5000 before you go, so the answer is settled before you reach the security line.
Can I leave my dog in the car while we are at the fair?
No. Massachusetts law bars confining an animal in a vehicle in a way that could threaten its health from heat or cold, and police, firefighters and animal control may enter the car to remove it. The AKC notes a car can reach 100 degrees in 20 minutes on a 70-degree day, with cracked windows making little difference.
When is the Topsfield Fair in 2026?
Friday, October 2 to Monday, October 12, 2026, at 207 Boston Street in Topsfield. The fair's hours page lists each day: opening Friday from 4 to 10 PM, most other days from 10 or 11 AM, and the final Monday from 10 AM to 8 PM.
Can my dog spend fair day at Dogtown if it has never been before?
Only after the free evaluation, which runs on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment: a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group. Have the vaccine records and a city license ready for it, and use FIRST15 for 15 percent off the first visit. If the evaluation cannot happen before your fair day, plan it for next October.
