Dogs at Salisbury Beach: April 1 to September 15 and the leash rule

Salisbury Beach State Reservation runs along 3.8 miles of coast where the Merrimack River meets the Atlantic, at the top of the Massachusetts shore. For a dog it is an off-season beach with a long closed season, five and a half months off the sand each year. This page covers DCR's rule, the parking fees that overlap the start of dog season, and what shares the sand with you.

The rule

No dogs April 1 to September 15; leashed on every other day of the year

DCR runs Salisbury Beach State Reservation on State Reservation Road in Salisbury, and its park page states the dog rule in two places. Under restrictions, it says no dogs or other pets, with the exception of service animals, are allowed on the beach from April 1 to September 15. In the overview, it says dogs must be leashed at all times when they are allowed on Salisbury Beach. The page lists the reservation's hours as sunrise to sunset.

DCR's guide to dogs in its parks fills in the details. In on-leash areas the leash may be no longer than ten feet, every dog must wear a collar with current license and rabies tags, and one person may bring no more than four dogs without a special permit. Dogs are kept out of DCR buildings, restrooms included, off DCR playgrounds and out of cabins and yurts. Salisbury's April 1 start matches the date DCR uses statewide for coastal beaches designated as priority nesting habitat for shorebirds.

  • Off the beach April 1 to September 15, service animals excepted
  • Leashed at all times the rest of the year
  • Leash of ten feet or less; license and rabies tags on the collar
  • No more than four dogs per person

The calendar

Dog season opens September 16, and the parking fee runs until October 12

DCR charges daily parking fees from May 23 through October 12: $14 for a car with Massachusetts plates and $40 for any other, with residency judged by the license plate and mobile payment through the YODEL app. That makes the first four weeks of dog season, September 16 to October 12, paying weeks. From October 13 to March 31 the beach is open to leashed dogs and the page lists no daily fee. The dates are DCR's to change, so check the page before each season turns.

Compared with Gloucester's Wingaersheek Beach, which takes dogs on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30, Salisbury opens two weeks earlier in the fall and closes a month earlier in the spring, with no odd or even dates to track. For a dog that lives between the two, late September belongs to Salisbury and late April to Wingaersheek, and the winter months work at either.

On the sand

A 3.8-mile beach shared with campers, boaters, anglers and riders

The reservation is more than a beach. DCR lists 484 campsites for tents, trailers and RVs, two boat ramps on the Merrimack River, fishing, horseback riding, a boardwalk, a playground, a pavilion and an accessible nature center. The park page does not say whether dogs may stay at the campground, so call the reservation at (978) 462-4481 before you book a site with a dog. In any season, DCR's statewide guide keeps dogs off its playgrounds and out of its buildings.

Fishing and boating are listed activities, so watch for hooks, line and bait on the sand, and keep a scavenging dog's leash short. Horseback riding is listed too, which means a dog may meet a horse on the beach; DCR's etiquette asks that a dog, even a friendly one, not approach other dogs or people unless invited, and that it stay under effective control. In winter the beach is open and exposed, and the AVMA's cold-weather advice on paws and short coats applies on a windy January walk.

  • 484 campsites: ask the park about dogs before booking
  • No dogs on DCR playgrounds or in DCR buildings
  • Fishing line and hooks on the sand
  • Give riders and horses plenty of room

A visit

A fall or winter walk at Salisbury, from the car to the rinse

An off-season walk here is simple if the order is right. Arrive after sunrise and leave before sunset, the posted hours. Clip the leash on in the car, since DCR wants dogs leashed in parking areas as well as on the sand, and keep to the open beach. Pick up the waste and carry it to a bin or home, and rinse salt and sand from the legs and belly before the dog climbs back in.

From April 1 the sand is closed again, and a dog that has had its winter beach will miss it. That is the season to switch to woods walks, a fenced dog park or a playgroup, and to book the spring groom that a winter of salt and wind makes welcome. Check DCR's page in March each year, because the closure date is set by the agency, not by the calendar on this page.

Afterwards

A Salisbury beach morning ends with a rinse at home or a bath in Gloucester

Salt water dries out a coat, and sand packs into feathering and between the toes. A bath and brush at Dogtown, 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, is a warm wash, a full blow-dry and a brush-out at $55, $65, $75, $85 or $95 by size, and nail clipping is $16. Since grooming needs no evaluation, the first bath can go straight into the Dogtown app or the online booking page.

Salisbury is outside the Pup Van towns of Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so ask us about pick-up, and plan the bath for a day you are already near Cape Ann. Daycare at $42 a day and overnight stays at $78 a night begin with a free weekday evaluation between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current license.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

When are dogs allowed on Salisbury Beach?
From September 16 to March 31, at the time of writing. DCR's page for Salisbury Beach State Reservation bars dogs and other pets, except service animals, from the beach between April 1 and September 15, and requires dogs to be leashed at all times when they are allowed. DCR posts the hours as sunrise to sunset.
Do dogs have to be leashed on Salisbury Beach?
Yes, always. DCR's park page says dogs must be leashed at all times when allowed on Salisbury Beach, and Salisbury is not among the properties on DCR's off-leash list. In on-leash areas DCR limits the leash to ten feet, and a dog must wear a collar with current license and rabies tags.
How much does it cost to park at Salisbury Beach?
From May 23 through October 12, DCR charges a daily parking fee of $14 for vehicles with Massachusetts plates and $40 for others, with mobile payment accepted through the YODEL app. Residency goes by the plate. That fee window overlaps the first weeks of dog season, from September 16 to October 12.
Why does Salisbury close to dogs on April 1 rather than May 1?
The park page gives the dates without a reason. DCR's statewide guide keeps dogs off its coastal beaches from May 1 to September 15 unless otherwise posted, and from April 1 at coastal beaches designated as priority nesting habitat for shorebirds. Salisbury's dates match the second schedule. Check the park page each spring.
Can I bring my dog camping at Salisbury Beach?
The park page lists 484 campsites but does not say whether dogs may stay, so call the reservation at (978) 462-4481 or read the booking terms before you reserve. DCR's statewide guide does bar dogs from its cabins and yurts and from DCR buildings. On the beach itself, the April 1 to September 15 ban applies.
