Mass Audubon

Are dogs allowed at Mass Audubon sanctuaries on the North Shore?

Mass Audubon applies one rule across its sanctuaries, and it does not change with the season. This page states that rule, gives one fact about each of the seven North Shore sanctuaries so you know what you are planning around, and points to the nearest places where a dog is welcome, each with its own page on this site. We checked every sanctuary page in fall 2026.

The rule

Dog walking is prohibited at every sanctuary; service animals are welcome

Mass Audubon's regulations page lists the rules for all its wildlife sanctuaries: foot travel only, on the trails; dog walking and horseback riding prohibited, with a request to leave all animals and pets at home; and no camping, collecting, smoking, hunting, releasing animals or feeding wildlife. Each of the seven sanctuary pages repeats the dog line word for word. There is no off-season, no leash exception and no exception for members.

Service animals are the exception, and Mass Audubon posts a Service Animal Statement on its regulations page for anyone who needs the detail. At Rough Meadows the rule comes from two directions, since Essex County Greenbelt manages the sanctuary in partnership with Mass Audubon and its own property page notes that dog walking is not permitted. Closer to home, the same rule covers Eastern Point Wildlife Sanctuary in Gloucester, which our page on where dogs are not allowed lists with the other year-round closures.

  • Dog walking prohibited at all seven sanctuaries, all year
  • Leave all animals and pets at home
  • Service animals welcome
  • Rough Meadows: Greenbelt says no dog walking too

At a glance

Seven sanctuaries, and a walk with your dog near each one

The table pairs each sanctuary with a nearby place that allows dogs and already has a page here. Sizes and trail lengths are Mass Audubon's own figures. The dog-friendly walks follow their own managers' rules, set out on each linked page: state parks and forests, Trustees reservations and Marblehead's exempt parks all handle leashes differently, so read the page for the place before you go.

None of the alternatives is a sanctuary, and none offers the same birding. They are where the dog goes on the same day, or where it walked in the morning before you left it at home. A few allow off-leash walking under conditions, notably Georgetown-Rowley State Forest, which DCR lists as off leash on its trails, and the Grass Rides at Appleton Farms; the rest are leashed walks. For the long trips, a daycare day at Dogtown is the third option.

Inland sanctuaries

Ipswich River, Endicott, Cedar Pond, Rough Meadows and Joppa Flats

Ipswich River, at 87 Perkins Row in Topsfield, is the largest: forest, meadow, wetland, a drumlin and an esker, with the river itself open to canoes and kayaks. Its trails are open Tuesday through Sunday and on Monday holidays, dawn to dusk, and nonmembers pay admission. Endicott, at 346 Grapevine Road in Wenham, has a short trail through mature mixed forest with views over a wet meadow, and it is home to the Ipswich River Nature Preschool.

Cedar Pond, on Cherry Street in Wenham, mixes upland forest, wooded swamp, marsh, field, bog and shrubland, and lies within the Eastern Essex County Interior Forest Important Bird Area; a universally accessible trail is among its facilities. Rough Meadows, on Patmos Road in Rowley, is part of the Great Marsh and is designated both an Important Bird Area and an Area of Critical Environmental Concern. Joppa Flats, at 1 Plum Island Turnpike, runs a nature center with marine touch tanks, open Tuesday through Saturday.

Coastal sanctuaries

Marblehead Neck and Nahant Thicket: small woods that fill with warblers

Marblehead Neck Wildlife Sanctuary covers 20 acres off Risley Road, in the middle of a peninsula that reaches into Massachusetts Bay, with 0.85 mile of trail open dawn to dusk. Its swamp, thickets and woods are a haven for migrating birds, warblers above all, in spring and fall, and unusual species turn up often. For the dog, Chandler Hovey Park at the end of Follett Street is on the same Neck and open to leashed dogs all year under the town bylaw.

Nahant Thicket, on Furbush Road, is among Mass Audubon's smallest sanctuaries, with a quarter mile of trail that hundreds of migrating warblers, vireos and thrushes pass through each year. A dog nearby has two options. The Lynn Shore and Nahant Beach reservation takes leashed dogs outside its summer closure, as our page on it explains, and Breakheart Reservation in Saugus has Bark Place, which DCR lists among its off-leash areas.

  • Marblehead Neck: Chandler Hovey Park, leashed, all year
  • Nahant Thicket: Bark Place at Breakheart, off leash
  • Rough Meadows: Georgetown-Rowley State Forest, off leash on trails
  • Ipswich River and Endicott: the Appleton Farms Grass Rides

The dog's day

A birding morning for you, a playgroup day for your dog

Most sanctuary visits start early, when the birds are moving, and that lines up with our drop-off. Weekday drop-off at Dogtown, 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, opens at 6:30 AM and Saturday's at 8 AM. A full daycare day is $42 and a half day $33, in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament. A parked car at a trailhead is no place for a dog to wait, least of all on a sunny day, so the dog's day deserves its own plan.

The Pup Van collects and returns dogs for $10 each way in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; from Topsfield, Wenham, Rowley, Newburyport, Marblehead or Nahant, ask us about pick-up. A new dog needs the free evaluation first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current license, so set it up well before spring or fall migration fills your calendar.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can I bring my dog to Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary if it stays on a leash?
No. Mass Audubon prohibits dog walking at Ipswich River and its other sanctuaries, leashed or not, and asks visitors to leave all pets at home. Service animals are welcome. For a walk with your dog nearby, the Appleton Farms Grass Rides in Hamilton and Bradley Palmer State Park each have their own page here.
Are service dogs allowed at Mass Audubon sanctuaries?
Yes. Mass Audubon's property regulations welcome service animals while prohibiting dog walking, and the organization publishes a Service Animal Statement on its regulations page. If you are unsure how the rule applies to your animal, read that statement or call the sanctuary before your visit.
Is the rule different at Joppa Flats, since it is an education center?
No. The Joppa Flats page carries the same property regulations as the other sanctuaries, so dog walking is prohibited and pets stay home. The center, at 1 Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport, is open Tuesday through Saturday and on Monday holidays. Maudslay State Park in Newburyport is the nearby place to walk a dog on a leash.
Is Eastern Point in Gloucester also closed to dogs?
Yes. Eastern Point Wildlife Sanctuary is a Mass Audubon property, so the same regulations apply: dog walking is prohibited and pets stay home. Our page on where dogs are not allowed on the North Shore lists it with the other year-round closures, and our Eastern Point page covers the rest of that end of Gloucester.
Where can my dog walk off leash near the Wenham sanctuaries?
The Grass Rides at Appleton Farms in Hamilton are on The Trustees' list of reservations that allow off-leash dog walking, except in grassland nesting habitat from April 1 to August 15 and at the entrance and parking area. Elsewhere nearby, plan on a leash. Our Appleton Farms page covers parking and the rest of the rules.
