Goose Cove Reservation with your dog
Not every Gloucester walk is a beach. Goose Cove is the kind of place a dog owner finds by following someone else's muddy dog to the trailhead. We keep this page to what we can stand behind: the rules that apply, what the ground does to a dog, and what happens at Dogtown afterwards.
The reservation

Goose Cove Reservation is a stretch of trail and shoreline in Gloucester that dog owners treat as a regular loop. We are not going to tell you who manages the land, when a gate opens or where to leave the car, because we have not verified any of it. What we can say is that a dog there is under Gloucester's dog ordinance the whole way, exactly as it is on the sidewalk outside your house.
At the time of writing that ordinance sets the leash and control rule, requires a current license, and requires you to pick up after your dog. The license comes from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave: $20 for a spayed or neutered dog plus a one-dollar fee, with a current rabies certificate, and a $20 penalty if you are late after April 30. The city's dog regulations page is the source for the current rule.
The cove sets the walking conditions. Trails beside a cove on Cape Ann are wet at the edges and soft for days after rain, the woods behind them hold ice in winter and mud through mud season, and the grass at the margins is tick habitat from April to November. A dog that likes water will find it. Decide before you leave the car whether that is fine today.

What it asks
Water, mud and a leash: the skills a cove walk needs
The first skill is a leash walk that stays loose when the dog can smell water. Dogs pull hardest toward the thing they want most, and a cove is a whole horizon of it. Practice on a boring street with a front-clip harness until the leash stays slack, then bring that dog to the cove. The second is a recall that works with a distraction in front of it, built on a long line rather than by unclipping and hoping.
The third skill is yours: the tick check. Ticks climb onto a dog from grass and leaf litter, and the edges of a wet trail are full of both. From April to November, run your hands over the ears, the armpits, the groin, under the collar and between every toe before you start the car. The CDC's tick pages show how to remove one with tweezers, close to the skin, without twisting.
Cold water is the fourth. A dog that swims in a Cape Ann cove in February comes out into wind, and a wet coat in wind loses heat fast. How Dogtown fits
Mud season ends at our tub
March and April on a cove trail put a dog in the tub whether you planned it or not. At Dogtown a bath is priced by size, $55 up to 25 pounds, $65 to 50, $75 to 90, $85 over 90 and $95 for an extra-large long coat, with a warm wash, blow-dry and brush-out. Grooming needs no evaluation, so a new customer can book online the same day. Ask for a tick check on the table, and add Shed Release for $10 in spring when the winter coat lets go.
If you would rather the dog was somewhere dry on a wet Tuesday, a daycare day at 210 Eastern Ave is $42 for a full day and $33 for a half, in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs on the turf yard and the indoor floors. The Pup Van collects in Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way. Dogs new to daycare do a free evaluation first, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM.
On the short days from November to February, an at-home walk from our team keeps the routine going: 20, 30 or 60 minutes at $25, $35 and $55, solo, with a photo afterwards. Whether we can reach your address depends on where it is and on the season, so ask before you plan around it. A 10-pack of 20-minute walks is $225.

Dogtown Common is 3,600 acres of woods and boulders in the middle of Cape Ann and is dog friendly, with a tick-check routine of its own. Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester is Trustees land where dogs are welcome. Wingaersheek Beach allows dogs on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30, and Plum Cove and Cressy take dogs in the off-season; the beach calendar page carries every date.
Eastern Point and the Dog Bar Breakwater are the harbor-side walk, with a warning about the granite. If you want a fence and an off-leash run instead, the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park, 65 Hough Ave, is two fenced acres with separate small-dog and large-dog areas, and its own page here covers the rules at the time of writing.
