Are dogs allowed at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate?

Castle Hill is the 165-acre summit of the Crane Estate, home to the Great House, the Grand Allée and the formal gardens, and its dog rule is one of the shortest on the North Shore. Below: what The Trustees publish, why the beach under the hill is no back door, and where an Ipswich walk with your dog can go instead.

The rule

Never on the grounds, in any month, and no way down to the beach from the hill

The Trustees' page for Castle Hill on the Crane Estate settles it in one line under Regulations & Advisories: dogs are never allowed on the grounds of Castle Hill. There is no off-season, no leash exception and no corner of the property set aside for dogs. The same line points out that Crane Beach has a limited dog season, but the beach is a separate place with its own gate and its own rules. We read the page in October 2026.

Two more lines matter to anyone who arrives with a dog in the car. Beach access from Castle Hill is not permitted, so nobody walks down from the hill to the sand, and grounds admission and parking are reserved for cultural site visitors only. That rules out parking at Castle Hill and slipping down to Crane in the dog season. The beach is reached by its own road: Argilla Road ends at the Crane Beach gate and lot, and a dog visit starts there.

  • Dogs never allowed on the Castle Hill grounds, in any month
  • No beach access from Castle Hill, for people or dogs
  • Castle Hill parking is for cultural site visitors only
  • Crane Beach takes dogs October 1 to March 31, through its own gate

Why it is different

A historic estate with formal gardens, which the Trustees' dog policy treats as sensitive ground

The Castle Hill page gives no reason for the rule, and we will not invent one. What The Trustees do publish is a statewide dog policy, and it names Resource Protection Areas where no dogs are allowed at all: working farms and gardens, coastal dunes, designated children's play areas, historic and cultural buildings and museums, and highly sensitive horticultural resources and National Natural Landmarks. The same policy keeps parks, estates and sensitive historic or cultural sites out of any off-leash designation.

Castle Hill fits several of those descriptions at once. Its 165 acres were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998. The Great House, built between 1924 and 1928 to a design by the Chicago architect David Adler, stands beside the Grand Allée, where ceremonies are held with sweeping views of Crane Beach, and the Italian Garden and the Rose Garden have been renovated and are tended as garden rooms. Add weddings, Thursday concerts in summer and tours led by costumed interpreters, and a dog-free hill is easy to understand.

Where to walk instead

Crane Beach in its dog season, the Appleton Grass Rides, Greenwood Farm or Hamlin on a leash

The obvious alternative is the beach below the hill, entered through its own gate. Crane Beach takes dogs from October 1 to March 31, free for Trustees member dogs and $5 a dog for nonmembers, and the dog regulations are handed to walkers at the beach gate. From April 1 to September 30, no horses, dogs or other pets are allowed. Our Crane Beach page explains the marked No Leash Zone and the leash rule everywhere else.

Away from the shore, three more Trustees properties in Ipswich and Hamilton take dogs in every month of the year. At Appleton Farms, dogs are welcome only on the 259-acre Grass Rides, reached from the Highland Street lot, and never on the farmstead side. Greenwood Farm, at 47 Jeffrey's Neck Road, requires a leash at all times. Hamlin Reservation, also on Argilla Road, allows dogs on leash only. Each one has its own page on this site.

Visiting without the dog

Touring the Great House or going to an event: settle the dog's day before you set out

Castle Hill's grounds are open daily all year: 9 AM to 5 PM from February to October, with last admission at 4, and 9 AM to 4 PM from November to January, with last admission at 3. Grounds admission is free for Trustees members, $10 for nonmembers and $5 for children 12 and under, and guided house tours are priced separately. The longest tour on the calendar, Grand Stairs to Back Stairs, takes three hours on its own.

The rule means the dog stays home, with a friend or somewhere it is welcome, and the car is not a stand-in for any of those. The Trustees' calendar runs all year: a theater production in March, the Thursday evening concert series in July and August, the Roaring Twenties Lawn Party in August, the Crane Estate Art Show & Sale in November and Christmas at Castle Hill through December. Plan the dog's day first, then the visit.

From Gloucester

A daycare day in Gloucester covers a Castle Hill visit, after one free evaluation

If you live on Cape Ann or are staying nearby, a day at Dogtown, 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, keeps your dog busy while you are up on the hill. A full day of daycare costs $42 and a half day $33, in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, on the turf yard and the indoor play floors. First-time customers can enter FIRST15 for 15 percent off that first day. Daycare is closed on Sundays, so pick a weekday or a Saturday.

Every daycare dog starts with a free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current license from your town. Book it ahead of a summer concert or a December visit, not on the morning itself. For a whole weekend of events, an overnight suite is $78 a night with playgroups by day. The Pup Van runs at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; from Ipswich, ask us about pick-up. We never take dogs to Castle Hill.

  • Full day $42, half day $33, in playgroups of 7 to 10

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can I bring my dog to Castle Hill if it stays on a leash?
No. The Trustees' rule is that dogs are never allowed on the grounds of Castle Hill, and a leash does not change it. The gardens, the Grand Allée, the lawns and the woodland trails on the hill are all part of the grounds. For a leashed walk in the same part of Ipswich, Hamlin Reservation and Greenwood Farm both take dogs on a leash.
Can I walk from Castle Hill down to Crane Beach with my dog?
No. The Castle Hill page says beach access from Castle Hill is not permitted, and its parking is reserved for cultural site visitors. Dogs reach Crane Beach through the beach's own gate and lot at the end of Argilla Road, and only from October 1 to March 31, at $5 a dog for nonmembers and free for member dogs.
Can my dog wait in the car while I tour the Great House?
We would not plan on it. The Trustees' page says nothing about dogs left in cars, but guided tours can run up to three hours, a closed car can turn hot in summer and cold in winter, and a dog shut in a parking lot rarely settles. Leave your dog with someone at home, or book a daycare day in Gloucester.
Is Castle Hill open in winter?
Yes. The grounds are open daily all year, from 9 AM to 4 PM between November and January with last admission at 3, while the Great House keeps a shorter schedule and opens for special events in December. Christmas at Castle Hill runs through the month. The dog rule does not relax in the off-season: dogs are never allowed on the grounds.
Is there hunting at Castle Hill?
Yes, limited bow hunting. The Trustees authorize seasonal bow hunting through a deer management program from the first Monday in October through December, Monday through Saturday, from half an hour before sunrise until half an hour after sunset, with signs posted at the property. It changes nothing for dog owners, because dogs are never allowed on the grounds.
