Pride weekend
Cape Ann Pride weekend with your dog
Pride weekend is one of the friendliest weekends of the Cape Ann year, and it lands in the sweet spot between mud season and beach-ban summer. This page is for the dog owner deciding whether the dog comes along, what to watch for if it does, and how Dogtown at 210 Eastern Ave fills the gaps.
The weekend
A late-May weekend of gatherings, music and crowds across Cape Ann
Cape Ann Pride organizes a weekend of events in late May, at the time of writing across venues in Gloucester and the wider Cape Ann area, with gatherings, music, vendors and family activities. The dates and the venue list change each year, so read the Cape Ann Pride site for the current program rather than planning from memory. Cape Ann Pride is one of Dogtown's community partners, and plenty of our daycare families spend a day at the weekend's events.
For a dog, the weekend looks like this: an outdoor crowd that moves and stops unpredictably, amplified music, flags and banners snapping overhead, face paint and glitter at nose height, strollers, and a lot of small hands reaching out to pet. Late May on Cape Ann also brings the first genuinely warm afternoons, when dark pavement heats faster than the air, and it sits in the spring peak of tick season, which here runs from April through November.

- Outdoor crowds, amplified music, flags overhead, children at nose height
- The first warm pavement of the year, and peak spring ticks
Your dog
A good Pride dog is the dog who is already good on a busy Saturday downtown
You do not need to guess. Take your dog to Main Street in Gloucester on a busy Saturday morning a couple of weeks before Pride and watch. Does it walk on a loose leash past a cafe queue? Does it sit while a child asks to pet it, and stay soft when the child does? Does a loudspeaker or a sudden cheer get a glance and nothing more? Those are the three skills a festival crowd demands. A dog that does all three will probably enjoy the weekend. A dog that manages two out of three will manage an hour.
Then plan the hour, not the day. Arrive early, before the crowd is dense, stay at the edges where your dog can turn away, and leave while it is still doing well. Bring water and a collapsible bowl, and put the back of your hand on the pavement before you stand anywhere for long; the AVMA's heat guidance applies from late May onward on Cape Ann. And be ready to say no to petting. A polite 'she is working on her manners today' protects a tired dog and a small hand at the same time.
- Loose leash past a cafe queue
- A sit and a soft body while a child pets
- One good hour at the edges beats a long day in the middle
How Dogtown fits
Saturday is a daycare day; Sunday is an overnight stay with a late-afternoon pick-up
Dogtown is open on Saturdays from 8 AM to 6 PM. Drop off between 8 and 10 AM, go to the Saturday events, and collect your dog between 4 and 6 PM, or use the 12 to 1 PM window for a half day. Saturday daycare runs $42 for the full day and $33 for the half. Your dog spends it in a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, on the turf yard with the pools filled when the afternoon is warm, and on the indoor floors when a late-May rain rolls in.
Sunday works differently. We are closed for daycare on Sundays, with the building open only for overnight-stay drop-off and pick-up between 8 and 10 AM and 4 and 6 PM. So if the Sunday program is the one you want, book an overnight stay for Saturday night at $78: your dog comes in Saturday, joins the playgroups on both days and goes home Sunday afternoon. New to Dogtown? The free evaluation comes first, on a weekday morning by appointment, so book it for early May and bring the vaccination records and your dog's current city license.

The rest of the weekend
The last Rockport beach days before June 1, and the trails that never close
Pride weekend has a quiet bonus for dog owners. At the time of writing Rockport closes its beaches to dogs from June 1 through September 15, which makes the last weekend of May the final chance for a dog to walk Front Beach or Back Beach before summer, on a leash or under direct voice control as the town requires. Gloucester's beaches closed to dogs on May 1, and Good Harbor closed a month earlier for nesting piping plovers, so Rockport is the only Cape Ann sand still open that weekend.
If the beach is not your dog's thing, the woods are open all year. Dogtown Common's 3,600 acres of boulders and trails sit right behind the city and are dog friendly; Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester welcomes dogs on Trustees trails. Both are shaded, which matters on a warm May afternoon. Check for ticks in the car afterward, before they have time to attach: behind the ears, under the collar, between the toes and in the armpits.
- Rockport beaches: open to dogs until May 31, closed June 1 to September 15
- Gloucester beaches: closed to dogs from May 1; Good Harbor from April 1 for plovers
- Dogtown Common and Ravenswood Park: shaded, dog friendly, open all year

Read next: the beach calendar, ticks and Lyme, and hot pavement
The Cape Ann dog beach calendar lays out every town's dates in one place, including the Rockport window that closes right after Pride weekend. The ticks and Lyme page explains why late spring is the peak of tick season on Cape Ann and what our daycare policy asks of you before drop-off. The hot sand and pavement page has the hand test and the times of day that matter once the sun gets high.
Pride draws families who are meeting a lot of dogs for the first time, and a calm, well-handled dog at the edge of a crowd is a small gift to every child who gets to pet it properly. If your dog is not that dog yet, a daycare day is not a consolation prize. It is matched play, a nap and an afternoon on the turf, which is the day your dog would choose anyway.
