Brittany grooming
Brittany grooming in Gloucester, MA
The AKC calls the Brittany's coat flat or wavy, mostly fairly short and in need of minimal grooming. The field is what makes the work: burrs in the feathering, seeds near the eyes, ticks under the ears. This page covers the bath, the light tidy, what a day in the brush leaves behind and the prices.
The coat
A dense, flat or wavy coat with light feathering, over skin built for brush
The breed standard asks for a dense coat, flat or wavy and never curly, with some feathering on the legs, thighs feathered halfway to the hock, toes not heavily feathered and ears carrying little fringe; too little feathering is preferred to too much. The AKC rates shedding three of five. Under the coat, the standard describes fine, fairly loose skin, noting that loose skin rolls with briars and sticks, which cuts down on punctures and tearing.
Even the face is designed around the field. The standard wants dry lips so feathers will not stick, and a lower eyelid that does not sag into a pocket that would catch seeds, dirt and weed dust. A hunting Brittany still comes home with all three, plus burrs. The AKC's routine is a once-over with a soft brush or hound glove and a quick comb through the feathering, with the underside of the ears checked and wiped clean.
- Body coat: dense, flat or wavy, never curly
- Feathering: light, on the legs and thighs
- Ears: little fringe, wiped underneath
- Skin: loose, built to roll with briars
Bath or tidy
Book the bath after field work, and the full service when the feet and feathering need a tidy
Most visits are the bath, $65 for a Brittany of 26 to 50 pounds: a warm wash, a blow-dry and a brush-out through the coat and feathering. It suits the dog that has spent a weekend in wet cover and comes home gritty and smelling of the marsh. The AKC notes that show Brittanys get only light trimming to neaten the head and neck, so a pet rarely needs much more than that.
The full service, $85, is the bath plus a breed-specific or custom trim. On a Brittany that means neatening the hair on the feet and between the pads, tidying the ear fringe and evening up the feathering on the legs, not a haircut over the body. Bring a photo if you like the feathering kept fuller or shorter, and the groomer confirms the plan and the final price at check-in after a coat assessment.
After the field
Burrs, seeds and ticks ride home in the feathering, so check the dog before you brush
Burrs come out best dry and by hand, before any brush touches them, because a brush drags a burr into a knot. Pull the hair away from the burr a few strands at a time, and cut only a burr that sits on the surface of the feathering, well clear of the skin. A coat knotted by burrs becomes dematting in the studio, $15 per 20 minutes on top of the bath. Our how-to on removing burrs from a dog's coat shows the method step by step.
Ticks are the other passenger. The CDC's prevention advice includes examining pets after time outdoors, because ticks ride into the house on them. Cape Ann's tick season runs April to November, and a bird dog quartering the cover at Ravenswood Park or the woods of Dogtown Common brushes past plenty. Check the ear undersides, the armpits, the feathering and between the toes, and look at the eyes for seeds.

Price
$65 for the bath and $85 for the full service, with nails at $16
At 30 to 40 pounds on the AKC's figures, a Brittany sits squarely in our 26-to-50-pound band. The bath is $65, and the full service with the feet, ears and feathering tidied is $85. The AKC asks for nails trimmed every month if they are not worn down naturally, so nail clipping at $16 belongs on most visits. Dematting for burr knots is $15 per 20 minutes, confirmed at check-in.
Booking around the seasons suits a field dog: a bath after a muddy stretch or a weekend in the cover, and the full service whenever the feet and feathering look ragged. Book the next appointment as you collect your dog and $5 comes off it. Overnight guests on the Dogtown Classic bundle save 10 percent on grooming, and Dogtown Deluxe guests and unlimited daycare members save 15 percent.

At home
At home, a soft brush, a comb through the feathering and the ears wiped underneath
The AKC's routine is short: a once-over with a soft brush or hound glove, a quick comb through the feathering, the underside of the ears inspected and wiped clean, and the nails trimmed monthly unless the dog wears them down. Do it after every run in the brush rather than once a week, because a burr left overnight works deeper into the hair. Brush the teeth regularly too, as the AKC suggests.
A Brittany needs lots of exercise, the AKC says, and Cape Ann gives it room. Off season, Wingaersheek takes dogs on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30 at the time of writing; rinse the salt and sand out of the feathering the same day. On daycare days, a Brittany can run in a matched playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs after the free evaluation, then go home bathed.
