Board and train for Woburn, MA dog owners
Woburn's ordinance is specific about the leash: no longer than eight feet in any public street or place. A 2026 amendment also lets the city post No Dogs Allowed signs on schools, parks and other public property, so where you practice matters as much as how. Here is what a stay in Gloucester involves for a Woburn family, and where the work continues back home.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- I-95 and Route 128 north from the Winn Street, Route 38 or Washington Street interchanges, staying on 128 at the Peabody split, to Eastern Avenue in Gloucester; about 50 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- City Clerk, City Hall, 10 Common Street: for 2026, $10 spayed or neutered and $15 intact on or before March 15, then $25 and $30 (woburnma.gov)
- The beach rule
- Horn Pond: city leash of eight feet or less; the city may post No Dogs Allowed signs on parks and public property (2026 amendment)
- A trail we know
- Horn Pond walking path, described in Woburn's 2023 open space plan as intensively used; leash of eight feet or less

Why Gloucester
Woburn families choose a Gloucester stay for force-free neutrality work that holds up on a busy path like Horn Pond's
Woburn's open space plan describes the walking path around Horn Pond as intensively used, and the pond as a popular fishing spot. A dog that has to pass walkers, anglers and other dogs on a leash of eight feet or less needs neutrality more than a clever trick. That is the core of our Advanced program: two weeks of distraction proofing, neutrality and impulse control, structured socialization and real-world outings. Foundation, one week, builds the groundwork of leash skills, place, stay and recall for younger dogs.
None of it uses force. Our trainers rely on rewards and clear communication, and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's 2021 statement says the evidence supports reward-based methods for all dog training. If a weekly class is all you are after, a trainer in or near Woburn is the shorter trip. A stay suits a family who wants daily, concentrated work led by Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, with an update each day and a dog sleeping in a monitored overnight suite.
- Neutrality around people, dogs and distractions
- Reward-based methods throughout
- Daily updates from Gloucester
- Overnight suites with 24/7 monitoring
Down 128
I-95 and Route 128 run through Woburn, and Eastern Ave is about 50 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
Woburn has Route 128 interchanges at Winn Street, Route 38 and Washington Street. Head north on the combined I-95 and Route 128 through Reading, Wakefield and Lynnfield, and at Peabody let I-95 go its own way while you stay on 128 toward Cape Ann. The highway crosses Danvers, Beverly, Wenham and Manchester-by-the-Sea before reaching Gloucester, where Eastern Avenue leads to our building at number 210. The run takes about 50 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate.
Because the drive is long, list the trips in advance. The van that runs in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way does not cover Woburn, so ask us about pick-up, or plan on the four visits below. Saturday windows, 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM, may suit drop-off for a working household; ask whether one fits the start of your dog's stay.
| Trip from Woburn | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Evaluation | Weekday, 6:30 to 9:30 AM, by appointment | Temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group |
| Drop-off | One of the drop-off windows | Your dog starts Foundation or Advanced |
| Collection | End of the stay | Go-home lesson at Dogtown, with you handling |
| Second lesson | Advanced only, scheduled | A further coaching lesson at Dogtown |
Woburn practice
Horn Pond's walking path is the leash classroom, and the city dog park at Ferullo Field comes later
Woburn's 2023 open space plan calls Horn Pond a heavily used recreational resource with an intensively used walking path, and notes that the pond matters to the city's water supply. That makes it a good, busy test for loose-leash walking and calm passing, on a leash no longer than eight feet. Pick a quiet hour for the first visits, give people who are fishing plenty of room, carry a bag tool as the ordinance requires, and watch for any No Dogs Allowed signs posted under the 2026 amendment.
The city put out a 2019 bid to build a new dog park at Ferullo Field, and the open space plan lists expanding that dog park as a Recreation Commission priority. A dog park tests recall from play, the hardest recall there is, so go only after your dog comes away from distractions on the Horn Pond path, and read the posted rules first. If anything goes wrong on a walk, the Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is a 24-hour emergency hospital.

City ordinance
Woburn licenses cost $10 or $15 until March 15, then $25 or $30, and leashes are capped at eight feet
Title 6 of the Woburn municipal code bars a dog from any public street or place unless it is effectively restrained by a chain or leash no longer than eight feet, and keeps dogs off school and cemetery property. A dog away from its owner's property must wear current license and rabies tags, and anyone walking a dog in public must carry something to pick up waste. A 2026 amendment raised the waste fines to $50, $100 and $150 and let the city post No Dogs Allowed signs on schools, parks and other public property.
The City Clerk, at City Hall, 10 Common Street, licenses dogs six months and older each calendar year. For 2026, the fee on or before March 15 was $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 for an intact one; after March 15 it rose to $25 and $30. Register online with uploads of the rabies record and the spay or neuter certificate, or use the mail-in form by mail or drop-off. More than three dogs over three months old at one address counts as a kennel under city zoning.
- Chain or leash of eight feet or less in public
- No dogs on school or cemetery property
- Carry a bag or tool; waste fines start at $50
- License by March 15 to pay $10 or $15
Next steps
After pick-up, keep the Horn Pond practice going, and book a private session from $94 if it stalls
Foundation closes with one go-home lesson at our building and Advanced with two scheduled coaching lessons, and in each you hold the leash while our trainer coaches. Bring the leash you actually use at home rather than a borrowed one, and bring any family member who walks the dog, so everyone learns the same cues. Ask at the assessment how the lesson dates are set, so the Woburn drive fits your week instead of squeezing it.
When you want more, private sessions start from $94, booked on the training form. Canine Campus is the hybrid alternative: 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training with your dog home each night, and pick-up and drop-off built into the program; confirm that it reaches Woburn before counting on it. Dogtown Academy days, at $89 full or $69 half, are an occasional option for families who find themselves on Cape Ann anyway.
