Rowley board and train

Board and train for Rowley, MA dog owners

On Rowley's conservation trails, the Open Space Committee asks dog walkers for one thing again and again: keep dogs on a leash. So the skill a Rowley dog uses most is a loose leash on narrow, muddy paths. This page covers what a stay works on, the drive down Route 1A, two town trails to practice on, the bylaw and license calendar, and the follow-up.

Why a stay

A stay in Gloucester puts a Rowley dog through daily leash work, so the leash-on trails at home get easier

Most Rowley walks are leashed walks, so loose-leash walking earns its place at the top of the plan. Foundation, our one-week program, covers basic obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners, with daycare integration and enrichment between sessions; it suits puppies and young dogs. Advanced runs two weeks for adolescents and adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality and structured socialization, which is what a dog leans on when a runner or another dog appears on a narrow trail.

The method is fear- and force-free: positive reinforcement, clear markers and no prong, choke or shock collars. Your dog sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, plays with a matched group of 7 to 10 when it is ready, and you receive a daily update. If you would rather learn beside your dog from the first day, Canine Campus keeps the training in the daytime and your dog at home at night; Gabriella Pope will say at the assessment which route fits your dog.

  • Foundation, 1 week: leash skills, place, stay, recall
  • Advanced, 2 weeks: distraction proofing and real-world outings
  • A daily update while your dog is with us
  • One go-home lesson, or two with Advanced

The drive

South on Route 1A, east on Route 133, then Route 128 to its end: Rowley to Eastern Ave

From Rowley, follow Route 1A south into Ipswich and turn east onto Route 133, which carries you through Essex and into West Gloucester. There Route 133 meets Route 128; take 128 to its end and Eastern Avenue to number 210, about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. Summer weekend traffic on Route 133 through Essex can stretch that, so give yourself a margin before a morning drop-off.

Pick-up is a question to ask us, because the Pup Van's $10 each-way price applies only in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and driving through Essex does not put Rowley on the route. At this distance the midday window, 12 to 1 PM on weekdays and Saturdays, is easy to reach. The free evaluation runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment: a temperament test, then a few supervised hours in a group.

Practice spots

Dodge Reservation and Hunsley Hills give a Rowley graduate two leashed classrooms; Rough Meadows is closed to pets

Dodge Reservation is the roomy one: more than 200 acres with over 2 miles of well-marked trails and fields, wetland and woods. Park at the YMCA entrance, 390 Wethersfield Street, which takes three cars, or at Eiras Park, 477 Haverhill Street off Route 133, which takes 30 or more. The Open Space Committee asks walkers to keep dogs on a leash, so practice the loose leash here: open field edges give you room to turn away from a distraction before your dog reaches the end of the leash.

Hunsley Hills is a glacial drumlin with 104 acres of woodland, three marked trails up the hill and a level one heading back toward Route 133 and Eiras Park. Trailhead parking for five or more cars is off the eastbound side of Route 133, across from the Rowley Police Department, and dogs stay leashed here too. The climbs suit a dog that pulls uphill. One Rowley listing is off limits: the Rough Meadows wildlife sanctuary, off Route 1A on Patmos Road, allows no pets on its trails.

  1. 01

Days 1 to 3: short loops from the Eiras Park end of Dodge at a quiet hour, rewarding a slack leash

  2. 02

Days 4 to 6: the same loop at a busier time, still paying for every check-in

  3. 03

Week two: Hunsley Hills, stopping still whenever the leash goes tight on a climb

  4. 04

Add the level trail back toward Route 133, where road noise becomes the distraction

  5. 05

Note where the leash tightened, and bring the notes to a coaching lesson or a private session

Rowley rules

Rowley sets no town-wide leash rule, lets its Animal Control Officer order restraint, and licenses dogs to March 31

Rowley's general bylaws, revised through August 12, 2025, contain no town-wide leash requirement. Instead, the Animal Control Officer may order an owner to restrain a dog from running at large, or from excessive or untimely barking, whining or howling, and breaking such an order costs $50, then $75, then $100 for each later offense. The cemetery bylaw is blunt: no unrestrained dogs, under any circumstances. On conservation land the committee's leash request applies, so in practice a Rowley dog walks every trail on this page on a leash.

Licenses come from the Town Clerk at 139 Main Street and expire on March 31. At the time of writing they cost $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for an intact one, with no charge for owners over 70 or for service dogs licensed on time. Renew online through the town's Pay My Bill page for an extra $1, by mail or the Treasurer's drop box with a check, a copy of the rabies certificate and a stamped envelope, or in person with cash or a check. Skip a year and the next license carries the missed fee and penalties.

After pick-up

Coaching at Dogtown closes the stay; private sessions and Canine Campus are the next steps if you need them

The go-home lesson is part of collecting your dog. A trainer runs each skill while you watch, then hands you the leash and corrects your timing, your position and your rewards until your dog answers you as readily as it answered us. Foundation includes one lesson and Advanced two scheduled coaching lessons, and the second is the place to bring whatever went wrong on Dodge or Hunsley in between. From Rowley that extra drive is a short one.

Nothing in the program happens in Rowley itself, so plan any follow-up in Gloucester. Private sessions start from $94. Canine Campus runs 2, 4 or 6 weeks of training and adventure days with pick-up and drop-off, daily reports and homework, and the front desk can tell you whether your Rowley address is covered. Our board and train page lists both stays in full, and the Dogtown app is the quickest way to tell us a skill has slipped.

  • Foundation: one go-home lesson at 210 Eastern Ave
  • Advanced: two scheduled coaching lessons
  • Private sessions in Gloucester from $94
  • Canine Campus: ask whether your street is covered

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is Rowley close enough to Dogtown for a board and train?
Yes. The drive is about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, by Route 1A, Route 133 and Route 128, so the evaluation morning, the drop-off and the go-home lessons are manageable trips. Summer weekends on Route 133 through Essex can add time, so leave a margin when a lesson is booked.
Where should my dog practice loose-leash walking in Rowley after the stay?
Start at Dodge Reservation, parking at 390 Wethersfield Street or at Eiras Park on Haverhill Street, then move to Hunsley Hills off Route 133 for the uphill test. The Open Space Committee asks walkers to keep dogs on a leash at both. Skip Rough Meadows, where the town's listing says pets are not allowed on the trails.
Does Rowley have a leash law?
Rowley has no town-wide leash rule at the time of writing. Rowley's bylaws let the Animal Control Officer order an owner to restrain a dog from running at large, with fines of $50, $75 and $100 for ignoring the order, and they bar unrestrained dogs from the town cemetery. The town also asks for leashes on its conservation trails.
When is a Rowley dog license late?
Licenses expire on March 31. The bylaw adds $10 if you pay 31 to 60 days after the due date, $15 at 61 to 90 days and $20 after that, and the town's 2026 notice puts the first $10 on May 1. We ask for the current license, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, before the stay.
Can Dogtown pick my dog up in Rowley?
Rowley is not one of the four Pup Van towns, which are Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way. Mention pick-up on the training form and we will tell you what is possible. Until the front desk has answered, plan to drive the evaluation, drop-off and go-home lessons yourself.
