The people involved
Who trains my dog during board and train?
Two kinds of work happen during a stay, teaching and caring, and different people do each. Knowing who does what tells you which questions to ask, and why one consistent plan matters more than one pair of hands.
Who leads
Gabriella Pope writes your dog's plan, and the training team carries it out
Every Dogtown training program, board and train included, is led by Gabriella Pope, known in the building as Gabby. You meet her first, at the short assessment that follows the training form, where she chooses between Foundation, Advanced and the other programs and writes the plan around the reason behind your dog's behavior. Her published background is a B.S. in Biochemistry, more than ten years of hands-on work with behaviorally complex dogs, work with Autistic youth and fostering dogs through Cape Ann Animal Aid.
Day to day, the training team works under that plan. What this site does not publish is a roster: the names of the other trainers, or how a week's training blocks are divided between them and Gabby. Those are fair questions, and the answers vary with the dates you book. Ask at the assessment who will run most of your dog's sessions, who writes the daily update and who will coach you at the go-home lesson, and expect a direct reply.
- The assessment and the plan: Gabriella Pope
- Daily training blocks: the training team, under her plan
- The daily update: ask who writes it
- The go-home lesson: ask who coaches you
Trainers and handlers
Trainers teach and handlers care, and a board and train dog spends time with both
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics groups everyone in this field as animal care and service workers, people who attend to or train animals, and the split it describes is useful. Care means feeding, cleaning living spaces, exercise, grooming and watching for signs of illness or injury. Training means teaching animals to respond to commands. A residential stay needs both every day, so your dog will meet more people than its trainer, and each of them has a different job in its week.
At Dogtown, handlers run the playgroups, matched by size and temperament, that a board and train dog joins once it is ready for daycare integration. Trainers run the temperament test at the free evaluation and the training blocks during the stay. The front desk takes your records, your food and medicines and your messages. Overnight, dogs sleep in suites with 24/7 monitoring, and how that is staffed is confirmed with you before you book. Add a bath before pick-up and a groomer joins the list.
- Trainers: the temperament test, training blocks and the go-home lesson
- Handlers: playgroups of 7 to 10, with breaks and settles between play
- Front desk: check-in, records, food, medicines and messages
- Overnight: 24/7 monitoring, with staffing confirmed before booking
- Groomers: only if you book a groom during the stay
Consistency
Several people can work with one dog, as long as each skill has one owner and one set of words
Karen Pryor's laws of shaping include a rule that answers the worry about many hands: do not change trainers in midstream; you can have several trainers per trainee, but stick to one shaper per behavior. In practice, one person builds a skill such as the recall from start to finish, while everyone else who handles the dog uses the same cue, the same marker word and the same release word, and takes care not to reward the habit being replaced.
The same rule applies once the leash comes home. Your household becomes the next set of handlers, which is why the go-home lesson hands over the exact words and signals rather than a general idea of them. If one person at home says come and another says here, or one lets the dog jump while another turns away, the dog learns that the rule depends on the person. Ask at the assessment how cue words are kept consistent across the team during the stay.
- One trainer builds each new skill from start to finish
- One cue word, one marker and one release word, used by everyone
- Handlers avoid paying the habit being replaced, such as jumping
- At home, the whole household uses the words from the lesson
Who you meet, when
You meet the people in a set order, from the assessment to the go-home lesson
The order of meetings gives you natural moments to ask about the team. The assessment is with Gabby. The free evaluation follows, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment at 210 Eastern Ave: your Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and city license go on file, and a trainer runs the temperament test before a few supervised hours in a group. Drop-off and pick-up then happen inside the published windows.
During the stay, the daily update is your view of the people working with your dog, and the front desk passes your questions to the training team. Training enquiries hear back within one hour on business days. Families on Cape Ann sometimes ask whether the Pup Van, $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, can bring the dog in at the start; ask, but plan to be at the go-home lesson in person.
