Credentials

What certifications do your trainers hold?

A credentials list is only useful if you can check it. Until Dogtown publishes named certificates, the honest version is a list of what is published, what is not, and how to verify whatever you are told, here or anywhere else.

A yellow Labrador sits on grass and places its paw in a kneeling man's hand during training.

The list, as published

The published list is a background and a method, not a row of certificates

Four facts about the training lead are on the record, and together they are the whole published list. Gabriella Pope holds a B.S. in Biochemistry. She has ten-plus years of hands-on experience with behaviorally complex dogs. She has worked with Autistic youth. And she has fostered dogs through Cape Ann Animal Aid in Gloucester. Alongside those, the site states one method for every program: relationship-based, fear- and force-free training built on positive reinforcement, mindfulness and clear communication.

Two broader statements appear as well. Dogtown describes its team as certified staff, and says certified trainers run the temperament test at the free evaluation. Neither names the certificate or the body that issued it, and we would rather point that out than let one word stand in for detail. A certificate is a claim anyone can check, so it deserves a name. Ask at the consult and we will answer by person and by credential.

Why it matters here

In a stay you will not see most of the sessions, so credentials and method carry extra weight

Massachusetts licenses kennels, not trainers, so no state document tells you what a trainer knows. Even the state treats certification as a benchmark rather than a requirement. Ollie's Law set up an advisory committee to shape the new kennel rules and reserved one seat for an animal behaviorist certified by the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants or a comparable body MDAR approves, and another for someone with at least five years of experience training people on dog behavior.

Whether the regulations will require staff credentials is still open. In July 2025 one committee member said kennel staff education fell outside the department's area of expertise and was not convinced it belonged in regulation, while others argued that training and education mattered more than any ratio. The regulations had not been released as of the March 18, 2026 minutes. Until they are, what a trainer holds is between you and the trainer, which is why the question deserves a precise answer.

  • No Massachusetts license exists for dog trainers
  • The statute's own benchmark: IAABC or a comparable body
  • Staff education in the regulations: still debated
  • Method is a separate question from credentials

Verifying

Verify any credential in a few minutes with the body that issued it, including an AKC evaluator approval

Every major credential has an owner you can ask. The CCPDT, the IAABC, the Karen Pryor Academy and Fear Free each run a public directory, and a listing should match the name and letters the trainer gives you. For CGC work there is one more approval to ask about. Dogtown prepares dogs for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test through Canine Citizen Academy and the 1:1 Private CGC Fast Track, and the test itself is given by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator.

The AKC's bar for that approval is modest and clear: an evaluator must be at least 18, have at least two years of experience working with owners and their dogs, have worked with a variety of breeds and sizes, and not be suspended from AKC privileges. Approval lasts two years and is renewed with a short application, so a lapsed approval is possible. Whether a Dogtown trainer can test your dog is confirmed at the consult; ask when the approval was last renewed.

Write down the exact letters and the name the trainer uses

  2. 02

Search the issuing body's directory for that name

  3. 03

Check that the credential is current, not just earned once

  4. 04

For CGC testing, ask about AKC Evaluator approval and its renewal date

  5. 05

Ask separately which tools and corrections the trainer uses

Method first

Whatever the letters, the method is published and fixed: force-free in every program

A credential tells you what someone studied; the method tells you what happens to your dog. Dogtown's is in writing for every program, board and train included: fear- and force-free, positive reinforcement, no prong, choke or shock collars. Both stays send a daily update and end with coaching, one go-home lesson after the one-week Foundation and two scheduled lessons in the two-week Advanced, so you see the work and take the leash yourself before the skills go home.

Bring your credential questions to the training consult; the team replies to the form within one hour on business days. Because the dog sleeps at 210 Eastern Ave, the free evaluation follows on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current license. Sessions start from $94. Our page on trainer credentials decodes the common letters, and Gabriella's profile sets out every program she leads.

  • Positive reinforcement in every program
  • No prong, choke or shock collars, no leash corrections
  • A daily update during every stay
  • One go-home lesson after Foundation, two in Advanced

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is Gabriella Pope certified?
Dogtown publishes her background, a B.S. in Biochemistry, ten-plus years with behaviorally complex dogs, work with Autistic youth and fostering through Cape Ann Animal Aid, and does not list trainer certifications for her on this site. If a particular credential matters to you, ask at the training consult and we will answer directly.
Does Massachusetts require dog trainers to be certified?
No. The state licenses the kennel where paid boarding and training happen, through the city or town, after an animal control inspection. It has no license or certification requirement for trainers as individuals, and whether MDAR's coming kennel regulations will address staff education was still under debate in the advisory committee's minutes.
Could a Dogtown trainer give my dog its CGC test?
Ask at the training consult. Dogtown prepares dogs for the Canine Good Citizen test, and the test is given by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator, whose approval runs for two years before renewal. Whether a Dogtown trainer can evaluate your dog, and when, is confirmed there.
Does a certification mean a trainer is force-free?
Not on its own. Certifying bodies set different rules about tools, and a credential mostly tells you what someone studied and was tested on. Ask about equipment and corrections as a separate question and get the answer in writing. Dogtown's programs are force-free, with no prong, choke or shock collars.
