Weekend rhythm
Do you train on weekends during board and train?
A weekend in the middle of a stay raises two practical questions: does the work pause, and can the stay start or end on a Saturday or Sunday. This page sets out what the published hours already decide, what research on spacing suggests about a lighter day, and the questions to settle at the consult.
Straight answer
Every stay spans a weekend, and how that weekend is used is settled in your dog's plan
A one-week Foundation stay covers seven consecutive days, so it always takes in a Saturday and a Sunday, and a two-week Advanced stay takes in two of each. Your dog sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring every one of those nights. What fills the weekend daytime, a full run of training blocks, a lighter schedule or a rest-heavy day, is something we answer for your dog at the consult rather than with one rule printed here.
The building itself changes shape at the weekend. Saturday runs 8 AM to 6 PM with daycare open, so playgroups carry on as usual. Sunday is closed for daycare, and the doors open only for overnight-stay pick-up and drop-off, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. With no daycare dogs arriving, a Sunday at 210 Eastern Ave is a quieter day for every dog in residence, whatever its training plan says.
- Foundation: one weekend inside the stay
- Advanced: two weekends inside the stay
- Saturday: open 8 AM to 6 PM, daycare running
- Sunday: closed for daycare; overnight windows 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM
- Weekend training plan: agreed for each dog at the consult
Why lighter can work
A lighter weekend would cost little learning, because spaced practice makes each session count for more
If your dog's plan does ease off at the weekend, the research gives no reason to worry. In a 2008 study, Meyer and Ladewig of the University of Copenhagen used clicker training to shape a target response in 18 laboratory beagles, nine trained once a week and nine five times a week. The weekly dogs learned the exercise in significantly fewer sessions. The five-times-a-week dogs still finished in fewer calendar days, which is exactly the trade-off a short stay is built around.
Put plainly, frequent practice gets a dog there sooner on the calendar, and gaps make each session work harder. A board and train sits between the two: frequent short blocks across the week, with rest built into every day. A quieter Sunday fits that pattern the way an evening off does, and our page on latent learning explains why a skill can look sharper after a pause than it did at the end of the last session.
- Trained weekly: fewer sessions to learn the exercise
- Trained five times a week: fewer calendar days
- A stay: frequent short blocks, with rest every day
- A quieter day: likely little cost to learning
Worked example
Worked example: a Monday drop-off puts the first weekend on days 6 and 7
Take a Rockport family booking Foundation with a Monday morning drop-off inside the 6:30 to 9:30 AM window. Days 1 to 5 run Monday to Friday, Saturday is day 6 and Sunday is day 7, so the weekend lands at the end, close to the go-home lesson. That makes it worth asking how those last two days are used: polishing the skills you are about to be handed, rest before the handover, or a mix of both.
Move the start and the weekend moves with it. A Thursday start puts it on days 3 and 4, early in the settling phase, while a two-week Advanced stay starting on a Monday carries its second weekend into the outings week. None of these is wrong; each simply shapes the plan differently. Take a calendar to the consult, circle the weekend days and ask what your dog would be doing on each.
| Start day | Weekend falls on | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, Foundation | Days 6 and 7 | Are the last two days polish, rest or both? |
| Thursday, Foundation | Days 3 and 4 | Does settling in carry on through the weekend? |
| Monday, Advanced | Days 6 and 7, then 13 and 14 | How does the second weekend fit the outings week? |
| Saturday, either program | Days 1 and 2 | Can a stay begin in a Saturday window? |
For your calendar
Settle drop-off, pick-up and the lesson date before you book, because weekends matter most at the edges
Saturday has drop-off and pick-up windows of 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. Sunday windows exist for overnight stays, and whether a board and train can begin or end in one is confirmed at the consult. Families who work weekdays often hope for a Saturday go-home lesson; ask early, because the lesson needs a trainer's time as well as yours, and it is the one appointment in the program you should not rush.
After pick-up, set a weekend rhythm of your own. Weekends are when most households have time, and in summer they are also when Cape Ann is busiest: Saturday mornings at Stage Fort Park or along Main Street in Gloucester make a hard test for a dog a week out of training. Use weekdays for short, easy practice and the weekend for one slightly harder outing rather than a marathon.
- 01
Mark the stay on a calendar and circle every Saturday and Sunday inside it
- 02
Ask at the consult how training, rest and play are planned on those days
- 03
Confirm which drop-off window starts the stay and which day it ends
- 04
Ask whether the go-home lesson can fall on a Saturday if weekdays are hard for you
- 05
Keep the Sunday overnight windows, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, in mind if plans shift
- 06
Plan the first weekend home: short weekday practice, one bigger outing on Saturday
