Intact dogs
Do you take intact dogs for board and train?
More owners now keep dogs intact for longer, often on their vet's advice about timing. This page explains why the question comes up at intake, which parts of a stay it can affect, and what to have ready when you enquire.
What it changes
Spay or neuter status affects the playgroup question, not the training plan
The skills on each program's list are the same for every dog. Foundation's obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners, and Advanced's distraction proofing, outings and neutrality work, do not depend on hormones. What can depend on them is the part of each program done alongside other dogs. Both programs list daycare integration as something a dog joins when it is ready, and readiness is judged one dog at a time.
The AKC notes that some daycare facilities and dog parks do not allow unneutered dogs or females in heat, and that intact males may mount, roam and urine-mark and can become more aggressive around other males or near a female in heat. Those are general tendencies, not a verdict on your dog. At Dogtown the evaluation, a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group, shows how your dog actually behaves with others, and the consult decides what that means for the stay.
- Intact adolescent male: group time judged on how he greets and plays
- Intact adult male: watched for mounting, marking and tension with other males
- Intact female between heats: dates planned around her next expected cycle
- Female in or near heat: AKC advice is to keep her away from males
Why dogs arrive intact
Neuter timing is a decision for you and your vet, and research gives breed-specific reasons to wait
In 2020 Benjamin Hart and colleagues at the University of California, Davis, published an analysis of records from the university's veterinary teaching hospital, most covering 15 years, across 35 breeds with the three Poodle sizes counted separately. They found that the link between neutering age and joint disorders or certain cancers varies by breed and by sex. Raised joint-disorder risk appeared mainly in larger breeds neutered before one year of age, while most small breeds showed no increase.
The authors conclude that no generalization about neutering age can be made for all dogs, and that owners and veterinarians can choose an age case by case. So an intact adolescent at intake is often a dog whose family is following its vet's advice, and a board and train date is never a reason to rush surgery. If a spay or neuter is planned near the stay, ask your vet how long recovery needs before a week of training and play, and tell us the date.
Heat cycles
For an intact female, the dates are planned around her cycle
The AKC says dogs generally come into heat about every six months, though it varies by breed: smaller breeds may cycle about three times a year and larger breeds once. A heat can last two to three weeks, and its advice during that time is to avoid contact with male dogs and keep her on a leash outside. A season that starts during a stay therefore changes the group side of her program, which is why her dates matter at booking.
Tell us when her last heat started and whether her cycles are regular, so the stay can be placed away from the next one where possible. If she has not had her first heat yet, say so, along with her age. What happens if a heat begins during the stay is confirmed at the consult, and it is worth asking about before you book rather than discovering the answer on day three.
- The start date of her last heat
- Whether her cycles are regular
- Whether she has had a first heat yet
- How a heat during the stay would be handled, asked at the consult
What to bring
Bring the paperwork that shows your dog's status, starting with the license
Every board and train dog needs Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city or town dog license. In Gloucester the license fee itself records status: at the time of writing it is $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for one that is not, each plus a $2 processing fee, and the City Clerk asks for a spay or neuter certificate unless the rabies certificate already notes it. Licenses are due by April 30, with a $20 late fee from May 1.
Put status in the training form from the start, along with your dog's age and anything you see at home that might be hormonal, such as marking indoors or mounting visitors. Foundation's crate and household manners work covers house routines, but a behavior with a hormonal driver is also a question for your vet. The free evaluation runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 at 210 Eastern Ave, and it is the right time to raise anything you have noticed.
