Summer visitors

Do you serve Cape Ann summer visitors for board and train?

A summer visitor has a fixed number of days on Cape Ann, and a training stay has to fit inside them with room at both ends. This page sets out the calendar math, a worked two-week rental, what to sort out before leaving home, and which service suits which length of visit.

The calendar math

A stay fits a visit when the evaluation, the program and a few days of practice all happen before you leave

Count the visit backward. The last days should be practice with your dog at the rental, after the go-home lesson, so questions come up while Dogtown is still a short drive away. Before that sits the program, one week or two. Before that, the evaluation, which runs only on weekday mornings by appointment, so a Saturday arrival puts it on the Monday at the earliest. Whether your dates are open is confirmed when you inquire.

That arithmetic gives the rule of thumb: about two weeks on Cape Ann for Foundation and about three for Advanced. Shorter visits still have a use. A family here for one week can complete the free evaluation, try a daycare or Dogtown Academy day, and drive home with the paperwork done, so a stay on next summer's visit starts from the consult rather than from scratch.

  • Evaluation on a weekday morning near the start
  • The program: one week or two
  • Go-home lesson before the final few days
  • Several days of practice before you drive home

Worked example

Worked example: a two-week rental in Rockport, Saturday to Saturday, with Foundation in the middle

Here is an illustration, not a booking. A family arrives at a Rockport rental on a Saturday. The training form went in three weeks earlier, and the consult was arranged before the trip. The evaluation is Monday morning, between 6:30 and 9:30. If the result and the calendar allow, drop-off is Wednesday, and the Foundation week ends with the go-home lesson the following Wednesday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning are left for practice before the drive home.

Rockport is one of the Pup Van towns, so the family can ask whether the van, $10 each way, can bring the dog in, though they drive over themselves for the lesson. Their beach days lose nothing, because Rockport bars dogs from its public beaches from June 1 to September 15 at the time of writing. The daily update in the Dogtown app keeps them in touch while the dog is with us.

Before you travel

Sort the paperwork at home, because the evaluation needs it on your first weekday here

Bring copies of the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records from your home vet, and the current license from the town where your dog lives; Massachusetts and New Hampshire both license dogs where they are kept. New customers complete the new customer form before the evaluation. Check each expiry date against the last night of the stay, because a vaccine that lapses midweek can hold up a stay a long way from your own vet.

Pack for the program as well as the vacation. A stay asks for your dog's usual food bagged by meal, any medications with a written sheet and one comfort item, so bring enough of the regular food for the whole visit rather than planning to find it locally. Note your home vet's name and number, and save the City of Gloucester's list of local and emergency veterinary offices before you arrive.

  • Vaccine records from your home vet
  • The license from your home town
  • The new customer form, completed
  • Enough of the usual food for the whole visit

Matching the visit

Match the service to the length of the visit: day options for short stays, a program for long ones

Not every visit suits a training stay, and that is no loss. Daycare and Dogtown Academy keep your dog with you at night and still use the same evaluation. Daycare is $42 for a full day or $33 for a half, and a first visit takes 15 percent off with FIRST15. An Academy day, $89 full or $69 half, adds a training session with our trainer, which suits a visiting dog with manners to polish.

Families who come back every summer have the best option of all: the evaluation on one visit and the stay on the next, with the consult held from home in between. The table shows how the choice usually falls. Whatever the length, Gabriella Pope confirms the program at the consult, and a dog whose problem is fear or reactivity is pointed to a program that keeps you present.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can a visiting dog's evaluation happen on a weekend?
No. Evaluations run Monday to Friday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, for visitors and locals alike. If you arrive on a Saturday, Monday morning is the earliest slot, so ask for it when you send the training form, and bring the vaccine records and license with you.
Which beaches can our dog use on a summer visit?
Very few. At the time of writing, Gloucester closes Good Harbor to dogs from April 1 and Wingaersheek, Plum Cove and Cressy's from May 1, each through September 30; Rockport bars dogs from June 1 to September 15; and Essex closes its beaches to dogs in June, July and August. Check each town's page before you go.
Can the Pup Van pick our dog up from a rental?
If the rental is in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea, the van runs for $10 each way to daycare, Academy days and overnight stays. Ask the front desk whether it can bring a board and train dog in. Go-home day is different, because the lesson needs you at Dogtown.
We visit in October. Is that a better time?
It can be. The heat has eased, and from October 1 Gloucester's beaches reopen to dogs under the city's rules, with Good Harbor on even-numbered days and Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days at the time of writing. A dog fresh from a stay then has somewhere new to practice, on a long line if its recall is still settling.
