Grooming

Can my dog be groomed during board and train?

A week or two of turf, pools and training shows up in the coat. This page covers when the groom fits into a stay, what it adds to the bill for dogs of different sizes, and what changes for a dog that does not enjoy the table.

Husky in the tub at Dogtown Grooming

Quick answer

Yes, the studio is down the hall, and the usual slot is the stay's final day

Grooming at Dogtown can be booked during a daycare day or an overnight stay, and a board and train includes nights in an overnight suite, so the studio is part of the same visit. Most families choose the last day, close to pick-up, so the dog is not back on the turf before the lesson. Add the groom when you book the program, or message the front desk during the stay with the pick-up window you are aiming for.

There is nothing extra to clear. Grooming needs no evaluation, and a board and train dog has already passed its own, with Rabies, DHPP, Bordetella and a current dog license on file. A bath is a warm wash, a blow-dry and a brush-out; full service adds a breed-specific or custom haircut. The final price is confirmed at check-in after a coat assessment, and booking your next groom at pick-up saves $5 on it.

  • Book with the program, or message during the stay
  • Aim for the last day, before the go-home lesson
  • No evaluation needed for the groom itself
  • Price confirmed at check-in after the coat check

Prices by size

Size sets the base price, and add-ons and coat condition move the total

The studio prices by weight. A bath is $55 up to 25 pounds, $65 from 26 to 50, $75 from 51 to 90, $85 over 90 and $95 for an extra-large long coat. Full service is $75, $85, $110 and $120 across the first four bands. Add-ons sit on top: nail clipping $16, teeth brushing $10, Shed Release $10, a sanitary trim $10, antiseptic or fungal shampoo $8, and dematting at $15 for each 20 minutes.

The table works four example dogs through the menu so you can see how a bill comes together after a stay. The figures are the published prices before the coat check; a coat that tangled during a week of play can add dematting time, which the groomer explains before starting. The Dogtown Classic and Deluxe bundles, which take 10 or 15 percent off grooming, belong to overnight stays, so ask at the consult whether either can apply.

Cooperative care

Cooperative care teaches a dog to take part in its own handling, and it begins with spotting stress

Cornell's Riney Canine Health Center describes cooperative care as teaching dogs to take part in handling voluntarily, through gradual exposure at the dog's pace paired with positive reinforcement. For a dog that already dreads grooming, counterconditioning pairs the experience with something the dog likes, usually food, to build a new association. The aim is a dog that holds still for a brush or a nail trim because doing so pays, and because it knows it can stop.

Cornell lists the signs that a dog is struggling: lip licking, yawning when not tired, freezing, pulling away and showing the whites of the eyes. When they appear, its advice is to pause, offer a break and plan smaller steps next time. Cooperative care is not on either board and train skill list, so raise it at the consult if the table is a battle. Brave & Balanced and Calm & Connected both work on handling sensitivity, over weeks rather than one stay.

Booking it

Book the groom in the right order, and the end of the stay runs smoothly

A groom tacked on during pick-up morning can collide with the lesson. Settle it at the consult or as soon as the stay is confirmed: say bath or full service, mention mats, sore spots or a medicated-shampoo need, and name the window you plan to collect in. If your dog needs extra time on the table, the $20 behavior or handling surcharge covers it, and a bath may be kinder than a full cut at the end of a busy fortnight.

Grooming can also sit away from the final day. If your dog rolls in something on day three, message the front desk through the Dogtown app and ask about a bath, since grooming can be booked during an overnight stay. And if your dog would rather not face the table straight after a stay at all, come back another day; grooming never needs an evaluation, and booking that next appointment at pick-up still saves $5.

For your dog

For your dog, a clean coat makes the lesson easier, and a calm groom keeps the training intact

The go-home lesson is close work: you hold the leash, reward from your hand and practice settles with your dog at your feet. A dog that has spent a week on the turf yard, in the pools and on Advanced outings will carry the evidence in its coat. On Cape Ann that often means salt and sand in the off-season, when Gloucester's beaches take dogs again from October 1, or tangles from the yard's pools in summer.

Order matters for a nervous dog. A groom that frightens it on the last morning is a poor way to end a stay built on trust, so if your dog finds the table hard, tell us, and consider a bath now and the full cut later. Handling is worth keeping up at home too: short, rewarded touches of paws and ears while your dog is relaxed, which is Cornell's advice and fits the force-free approach of the whole program.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is grooming included in the board and train price?
Grooming is a separate service with published prices, from $55 for a bath on a small dog to $120 for full service on a dog over 90 pounds. Ask at the consult how it is billed alongside the program. Add-ons such as nail clipping at $16 are extra, and the groomer confirms the total at check-in.
Can my dog be groomed in the middle of the stay?
Grooming can be booked during an overnight stay, so ask the front desk if your dog needs a bath before the end, for example after rolling in something on the turf. Most families still choose the final day, so the coat is fresh for the go-home lesson and the next grooming cycle starts clean.
What does the $20 handling surcharge cover?
Extra time and hands for a dog that needs slower, more careful handling on the table. It is published on the grooming menu at $20. For a dog that struggles every time, the longer-term fix is cooperative care, so ask at the consult which program would build it with you over several weeks.
My dog has never been groomed. Is the end of a stay a good time to start?
It can be, because the building and the people are familiar by then. Keep the first groom simple, a bath and a nail trim rather than a full cut, and tell the groomer it is a first time. Short, rewarded handling of paws and ears at home in the weeks before helps as well.
