Portuguese Water Dog board and train in Gloucester, MA
The AKC calls the Portuguese Water Dog bright and biddable, bred as an all-around fisherman's helper. In a city whose fishing history runs partly through Portugal, that makes the breed feel local. It also makes it a dog with a working mind, an athletic body and a mouth built to carry things.
The breed
Portugal's fishing dog meets a fishing city with Portuguese roots
The AKC recounts that these dogs lived along Portugal's coast, herding fish into nets, retrieving lost tackle and carrying messages between ships and shore, and rode trawlers as far as the cold waters off Iceland. Technology eventually took that job away, the AKC adds, though Porties are still used in water rescue. Gloucester has its own Portuguese fishing story: the first Our Lady of Good Voyage church was built here in 1892 for Portuguese immigrants who came to work in the fishery. No source we have found puts the breed on Gloucester boats, but the histories rhyme.
For training, the AKC's ratings stand out: 5 out of 5 for energy, trainability, playfulness and mental stimulation needs. Its notes describe a very intelligent dog that responds well to obedience work, demands attention and human contact, and greets friends with unbridled enthusiasm. They add that the breed often thinks independently and may challenge its owner's will, and that it needs positive methods plus daily mental and physical exercise. Males run 42 to 60 pounds, females 35 to 50.
- Energy, trainability and mental needs: 5 of 5 each
- Thinks independently and will test inconsistency
- Greets everyone with enthusiasm
- Positive methods and daily exercise, per the AKC
The mouth
A mouthy Portie needs a legal job for its mouth, and the stay teaches one
A dog bred to fetch tackle and carry messages meets the world mouth first, and young Porties often grab sleeves, hands and leashes in play. The AKC's puppy guidance notes that teething can last up to six months and that most puppies grow much less mouthy as they finish teething and mature. Until then the answer is not punishment. It is giving the mouth something better to do, and stopping play the instant teeth land on skin.
During a stay, mouth work is built into the day. A Portie learns to carry a toy at greetings and on walks, to drop it for a trade, and to tug only when invited. A frozen Kong ($6) or a lick mat ($5) gives the jaw a calm job in the suite, and daycare integration, once the dog is ready, adds matched playmates that answer rough mouthing in their own language. The go-home lesson shows you the same carry and trade games.
- 01
Keep a soft toy within reach at every greeting
- 02
Hand the toy over before the dog grabs a sleeve
- 03
Trade the toy for a treat, then give it back
- 04
Add a drop cue once the trade is automatic
- 05
Pause all play for a few seconds when teeth touch skin
- 06
Restart with the toy, never with your hands
Which program
Mouthing points a Portie toward Foundation, and full-speed greetings point it toward Advanced
Foundation, one week, covers basic obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners. For a young Portie the most useful of these are impulse control around toys and doors, a place cue that gives an energetic dog an off switch, and crate manners that teach it to rest. Daily updates report how the mouth work and the settling are going, and a go-home lesson hands everything over to you.
Advanced, two weeks, suits the adolescent water dog that knows its cues and abandons them the moment a person appears. It adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality and structured socialization, plus two scheduled go-home coaching lessons. The work targets the breed's big greetings: four paws down, a toy in the mouth instead of a jump, and a sit for petting. The AKC notes Porties can be too exuberant for families with very young children, which is why greetings get so much of the second week.
Common mistakes
Portie mistakes: wrestling with hands, exercise without thinking work and rules that change by the day
Rough play with hands teaches a mouthy puppy that skin is a toy, and children who run and squeal make it worse. Keep games on toys. The second mistake is exercise alone. A breed rated 5 out of 5 for mental stimulation needs thinking work every day, so a long run without sniffing, retrieving with rules or a little training leaves the dog fit and still restless.
The third is inconsistency. The AKC warns that a Portie may sometimes challenge its owner's will, and an independent dog notices quickly when the rules shift by the day or by the person. Agree as a household on the cues, the release word and what happens when the dog jumps. Harsh corrections are the wrong fix; the AKC is explicit that this breed needs positive training methods.
- Toys for play, never hands or sleeves
- Daily thinking work alongside the running
- One set of house rules for every family member
- Calm greetings rewarded; jumping simply not paid
After the stay
After the stay, swim on the legal days and keep the brain busy between them
The AKC says the breed needs vigorous exercise every day, and for many enthusiasts water work is the favorite. On Cape Ann that is seasonal. At the time of writing, Good Harbor Beach is closed to dogs from April 1 to September 30 and open to them off leash on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31. Use those mornings to practice the recall and the drop cue in the place your Portie most wants to ignore you.
Between beach days, Dogtown Academy builds a trainer session into every day at $89 full or $69 half, and the puzzle game or the sniff room, $7 each, adds brain work to a daycare day. The coat needs clipping on a regular cycle, and our studio does a full service for $85 for most Porties up to 50 pounds or $110 above that. Private sessions start from $94 if the mouthing or the greetings slip.
