Board and train for Methuen, MA dog owners
Methuen's municipal code is specific about parks: several are closed to dogs altogether, and the city forest admits leashed dogs only in Forest Lake Park. Knowing where to practice is as useful as the training itself. This page covers why a Methuen family would drive to Gloucester, the route, the places that suit practice, the code and license, and the follow-up.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 28 south through Lawrence to Route 114, Route 114 east through North Andover, Middleton and Danvers, then Route 128 north to its end and Eastern Avenue; about 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- City Clerk, Searles Building, 41 Pleasant Street, Room 112: every dog registered yearly with a rabies certificate; online or in person; code fee $15, or $10 with a spay or neuter certificate (confirm with the clerk)
- The beach rule
- Code 23-46: off your property a leash of six feet or less, held firmly; no dogs in Riverside, Spiggot Falls Riverwalk or Tenney Street parks, on school sites or in public cemeteries
- A trail we know
- Methuen Rail Trail, Lawrence line to the New Hampshire border: leash rule applies, no motorized recreational vehicles; Forest Lake Park: leashed dogs, not in the swimming area or boat ramp, residents only

Why drive
A Gloucester stay suits a Methuen family that wants daily force-free training without an hour's drive every week
An hour each way rules out a weekly class at our building for most Methuen schedules, and we would not suggest one. A stay concentrates the work instead: your dog trains every day while you make a handful of trips. Foundation, one week, covers basic obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners, with daycare integration and enrichment. Advanced, two weeks, adds advanced obedience with distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization.
What the drive gets you is a force-free program: positive reinforcement, mindfulness and clear communication, with no prong, choke or shock collars, led by a trainer whose experience includes fostering dogs through Cape Ann Animal Aid. Your dog sleeps in a suite with 24/7 monitoring and, if suited to groups, plays in a matched group of 7 to 10. If what you need is a weekly class near home, a local trainer may suit you better, and we will say so if that is our read.
Getting to Eastern Ave
Route 28 south to Route 114, then Route 128 north, takes about 60 minutes from Methuen, by our estimate
From central Methuen, take Route 28 south through Lawrence to Route 114, then follow 114 east through North Andover, Middleton and Danvers to Route 128 north. Route 128 ends in Gloucester close to Eastern Avenue, and number 210 is our building. Allow about 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. I-93 south to Route 128 is all highway but adds miles, and weekday commuter traffic on either route can stretch the trip well past an hour.
The Pup Van does not reach Methuen. The city has no Commuter Rail stop of its own; the Haverhill Line serves Lawrence next door, and under the MBTA rider rules a larger dog may ride only off-peak, leashed and off the seats, at staff discretion. For the evaluation, arrive between 6:30 and 9:30 AM on a weekday with your Methuen license and the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.
- Route 28 south, Route 114 east, Route 128 north: about 60 minutes
- I-93 to Route 128: highway all the way, longer distance
- No Pup Van in Methuen, so ask about pick-up
- Evaluation: weekdays, 6:30 to 9:30 AM
Where dogs may go
Practice on the Methuen Rail Trail and in Forest Lake Park, and skip the parks the code closes to dogs
The Methuen Rail Trail follows the old Lawrence to Manchester Branch right of way from the Lawrence line to the New Hampshire border, and the city code bans motorized recreational vehicles on it. It is a long, straight path that suits loose-leash walking; practice a sit-and-watch whenever a cyclist or runner passes, and reward your dog for looking back at you. The city's six-foot leash rule applies on the trail, as it does everywhere off your own property.
Forest Lake Park, in the City Forest off Hampshire Road, is the other option. The code bars animals from the City Forest except leashed dogs in Forest Lake Park, keeps them out of the swimming area and the boat ramp, and limits admission to Methuen residents. The city closed the lake for the 2026 season on August 27; in season it charges residents $10 per vehicle per day. Riverside Park, Spiggot Falls Riverwalk Park and Tenney Street Park are closed to dogs, leashed or not, and so are school grounds and public cemeteries.

City code and license
Methuen's code wants a firmly held leash of six feet or less, and the City Clerk registers every dog each year
Section 23-46 of the municipal code says no dog may be kept outside its owner's or keeper's property unless it is held firmly on a leash not exceeding six feet, and it sets a $25 fine. Section 23-48 requires you to pick up after your dog in parks, on beaches and on the grounds of public buildings, school grounds included, at $100 per offense. Dogs are barred from school sites and from public cemeteries, on a leash or not, at $100 per offense, with exceptions for service dogs in the cemetery rule.
The City of Methuen requires every dog to be registered each year, and a rabies vaccination certificate is needed for the license. Apply through the city's online permit portal or at the City Clerk's office, Room 112 of the Searles Building at 41 Pleasant Street, open Monday to Thursday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM and Friday from 8 AM to noon. The municipal code posted on the city's website sets the fee at $15, or $10 with a veterinarian's spay or neuter certificate; confirm the current amount with the clerk before you pay.
- Leash: held firmly, six feet or less, off your property
- Dog waste in parks, on beaches and at schools: $100 per offense
- No dogs on school sites or in public cemeteries
- License: every year, with a rabies certificate, from the City Clerk
Follow-up
Take the go-home lesson in Gloucester, then practice in Methuen before deciding whether you need more help
Pick-up includes a go-home lesson, and an Advanced stay adds a second scheduled coaching lesson. Because the drive is about an hour, schedule both when you book and bring everyone who walks the dog. During the stay, the daily updates show what your dog worked on, so you arrive at pick-up with questions ready rather than starting cold.
Home visits in Methuen are not on our published menu; ask the front desk. Give the new skills two or three weeks of practice on the rail trail and around your neighborhood; if something keeps slipping, private sessions at Eastern Ave start from $94. Canine Campus offers 2-, 4- and 6-week plans with training days and nights at home, and it includes pick-up and drop-off, so ask whether Methuen is within reach. A dog that reacts on leash may need React Less, Relax More: eight weeks and 16 sessions. The board and train page has the full list of what Foundation and Advanced cover.
