Aussiedoodle grooming
Aussiedoodle grooming in Gloucester, MA
An aussiedoodle crosses a herding dog with a double coat and a poodle with a curly, low-shedding one, and the AKC publishes no breed standard for the cross. What you groom is whichever mix of those two coats your dog inherited, carried around by a dog with an Australian Shepherd's energy.
The coat
Curly, wavy or close to an Aussie's double coat: an aussiedoodle grows whichever mix of its parents' coats it inherited
The two parent coats could hardly be further apart. The AKC describes the Australian Shepherd's as a waterproof, double-layer coat that sheds, needing an undercoat rake every two or three days in shedding season. It describes the Poodle's as a curly, relatively non-shedding coat that mats near the roots unless it is combed completely to the skin. An aussiedoodle can land anywhere between the two, so one dog's grooming can look nothing like another's.
Size varies as much as coat. A standard poodle parent weighs 40 to 70 pounds on the AKC's figures and a miniature 10 to 15, and some smaller aussiedoodles come from the Miniature American Shepherd, which the AKC puts at 20 to 40 pounds. That is why the same cross can sit in our small, medium or large band. The groomer reads the coat and the weight at check-in, not the label on the puppy paperwork.
- Curly coat: closest to the poodle, low shedding, mats at the roots
- Wavy coat: a softer mix that tangles where anything rubs
- Straighter coat: closer to the Aussie, sheds and wants a rake in season
- Every type: brushed to the skin, or kept short enough that the comb reaches it
Cut length
A short, even length is the beach cut; a longer, fluffier coat stays only if someone combs it to the skin
The full service is a bath plus a breed-specific or custom haircut, and with no breed standard to follow, an aussiedoodle's cut is whatever length you can keep. For a dog that swims, rolls in sand and runs the Dogtown Common trails, the practical choice is short and even over the body, with the face, ears and tail left a little fuller. Salt water and sand dry out of a short coat quickly, and a comb reaches the skin in a minute.
A longer, fluffier look is possible if someone at home will comb it to the skin, the AKC's rule for any full poodle coat. Bring a photo of the length you like and say how often the dog swims; the groomer weighs that against the coat in front of them. If the coat has felted to the skin, the kind answer may be shorter than the photo, and that conversation happens at check-in, before any clipper is switched on.
The harness line
Every four to six weeks keeps the cut; past that, the harness line and armpits mat first, at $15 per 20 minutes
The AKC's rhythm for a poodle kept in a pet trim is a professional groom every four to six weeks, and a curly or wavy aussiedoodle fits the same window. Inside it, the visit is a bath and a reshape. Past it, the first mats appear wherever something rubs: under the harness straps, behind the ears, in the armpits and between the back legs. Friction twists loose hair into the curl, and a wet walk tightens it.
Dematting is $15 per 20 minutes on top of the full-service price, so a coat that needs forty minutes of work under the straps costs $30 more before the haircut starts. The groomer shows you the knots at check-in and gives the estimate first. Where mats sit tight against the skin, combing them out hurts, and a shorter clip in that area is often the kinder trade. A straighter, Aussie-type coat may go longer between cuts but needs Shed Release, $10, in a shed.
- Under the harness: the chest strap and the girth strap
- Behind the ears and under the collar
- Armpits and the inside of the back legs
- The tail base and the trousers, after every sit on wet sand
Price
Full service is $75, $85 or $110 by weight, and a herding dog that needs more time adds $20
Weight sets the price, so a mini and a standard aussiedoodle pay different amounts for the same kind of cut. Up to 25 pounds the full service is $75; from 26 to 50 pounds it is $85; from 51 to 90 pounds it is $110; and the rare dog over 90 pounds pays $120. A bath on its own, for a rinse between haircuts after a salty week, is $55, $65, $75 or $85 on the same scale.
An aussiedoodle can carry its Aussie parent's energy, rated five out of five by the AKC, onto the table. A young dog that wants to watch the door or herd the dryer may need slower handling, and the $20 behavior or handling surcharge pays for that time and a second pair of hands. Nails are $16, a sanitary trim $10, and booking the next groom at pick-up takes $5 off it.
| Aussiedoodle size | Weight | Bath | Full service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toy or small mini | Up to 25 lb | $55 | $75 |
| Mini or medium | 26 to 50 lb | $65 | $85 |
| Standard | 51 to 90 lb | $75 | $110 |
| Large standard | Over 90 lb | $85 | $120 |
At home
Between grooms, take the harness off indoors, brush in sections to the skin, and rinse the salt out after the beach
The single biggest help is taking the harness off as soon as the walk is over, so the straps are not rubbing all evening. Then brush in sections, lifting the top layer and working from the skin out, as our how-to on brushing a doodle between grooms shows. A metal comb that slides through to the skin tells you the section is done; one that snags has found the start of a mat.
Cape Ann's off-season beaches are the other test. At the time of writing, Good Harbor Beach takes dogs off leash on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31, and Rockport bans dogs from its public beaches from June 1 to September 15. After any salt-water swim, rinse the coat in fresh water and dry it fully; a curly coat left to dry damp, with sand in it, tightens into felt by morning.
