What is day training for dogs?
Day training sits between doing it all yourself and sending your dog away. It suits more households than either, and it fails in one predictable way. Here is how it works, how it compares with the other formats, and who it fits.
The short version
In day training the trainer does the daily practice and you learn the handoff
Most dog training puts the repetitions on the owner. In a class or a private lesson, a trainer shows you an exercise for an hour and you practice it every day until the next visit. Day training flips that. The dog spends its days with a trainer who runs dozens of short repetitions in varied settings, and the owner's job shrinks to reading the report, practicing for a few minutes in the evening and learning the cues properly at the end.
The format comes in two broad shapes. In some versions the trainer comes to the house; in others the dog spends the day at a facility. Dogtown's version is facility-based with pick-up and drop-off included: a dog on Canine Campus spends training and adventure days with our team and sleeps in its own bed every night. The table sets it beside the other ways to train a dog at Dogtown.
| Format | Who does the daily practice | Where the dog sleeps | At Dogtown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lessons over several weeks | You, between sessions | Home | Level 1 to 3 programs, from $94 a session |
| Day training | The trainer, with short homework for you | Home | Canine Campus, 2, 4 or 6 weeks |
| Board and train | The trainer | Away for the stay | Foundation 1 week or Advanced 2 weeks |
| Structured daycare | A trainer for part of each day, booked day by day | Home | Dogtown Academy, $89 a full day or $69 a half day |
The handoff
Day training only works if the skills move from the trainer to you
The predictable failure is a dog that behaves beautifully for the trainer and ignores its owner. Dogs learn in context, and the trainer's voice, timing and treat pouch are part of that context. Well-run day training plans for this from the first day: the cue words are agreed with the family, what was practiced is written down, and the homework is small enough that a tired owner will actually do it on a Tuesday night.
Canine Campus builds that in. Every plan includes daily reports, homework and an end-of-program lesson, where the trainer shows you what your dog can do, how to ask for it and what to do when it falls apart. Afterward many dogs keep the work going with Dogtown Academy days, where every day includes a training session with our trainer. How much sticks still depends on the practice at home, and our Canine Campus page explains each level in full.
- 01
Agree the cue words with the trainer before the first day
- 02
Read the daily report on the evening it arrives
- 03
Do the homework for five minutes, not fifty
- 04
Use the same rewards the trainer uses
- 05
Learn the cues properly at the end-of-program lesson
- 06
Teach the cues to everyone at home within the week
Who it fits
Canine Campus fits working households, adolescents, new rescues and complex cases
Day training is strongest when the household has the will but not the hours. A couple who leave on early trains and get home after six cannot run three sessions a day; a trainer can. Freshman, 2 weeks with about 10 training and adventure days, suits young dogs and new arrivals who need foundations, real-world exposure and, when it is appropriate, a careful start in daycare. Dean's List, 4 weeks and about 20 sessions, is the adolescent level: leash skills, impulse control, obedience, confidence, neutrality, household manners and mild-to-moderate reactivity.
Graduate, 6 weeks and about 30 sessions, is for more complex behavior: reactivity, significant leash struggles, impulse control, confidence, environmental neutrality and generalization. Plans vary with the intensity and complexity of each dog's needs, and the level is set at an assessment with Gabriella Pope. Day training is a weaker fit for owners who want to run every repetition themselves, who are better served by a lesson-based program from $94 a session, and for very young puppies, who usually start with Tiny Tails Puppy School.
- Freshman, 2 weeks: young dogs and new arrivals
- Dean's List, 4 weeks: adolescents and mild-to-moderate reactivity
- Graduate, 6 weeks: complex behavior and generalization
- Young puppies: usually Tiny Tails first; ask whether Freshman suits
On Cape Ann
Pick-up is part of every Campus plan, which matters on a Cape Ann commute
Pick-up and drop-off are included in every Canine Campus plan, and the Pup Van's regular area is Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; families elsewhere on the North Shore should ask what can be arranged. That matters for commuters, because the MBTA does not allow pet dogs too big for a carrier on its trains during weekday peak hours, so a dog cannot ride in with you on the early train. If you would rather drive, weekday drop-off windows are 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM.
Because daycare integration is part of Campus when it suits the dog, the free evaluation comes first, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city license. In Gloucester that license comes from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave: $20 for a spayed or neutered dog or $25 for an intact one, each plus a $2 processing fee on the 2026 application, due by April 30.
