After kennel cough
Should my dog keep going to daycare after kennel cough?
A cough after daycare raises two questions at once: when can my dog go back, and should it go back at all? This page takes them in order, then covers what a daycare normally does when several dogs cough in the same week and what to ask us about it.
Home first
A coughing dog stays home, and the return date counts from the last cough
The first rule is the easy one. Keep a dog with a cough, sneezing, a runny nose or a fever at home, and call us before the next daycare, Dogtown Academy or overnight booking. The University of Tennessee's veterinary college compares it to keeping a sick child home from school, and the AVMA says the way to stop spread is to keep the dog away from other dogs until it has fully recovered. Call your vet, describe the cough and when it started, and let the Dogtown front desk in Gloucester know as well.
Count the return from the end of the illness, not the start. The AKC's guidance is to keep a dog away from other dogs while it has symptoms and for at least two weeks after the coughing stops, and to skip boarding, daycare and social contact in that time. Most mild cases clear within 7 to 10 days, according to the AVMA, so for many dogs the whole break runs to three or four weeks. Your vet may advise a different timeline for your dog; follow theirs.
- Cough, sneezing, discharge or fever: home, and call your vet
- Count the return from the last cough, not the first
- AKC guidance: at least two weeks symptom-free before mixing with dogs
- Labored breathing, fever or refusing food: veterinary care now
Coming back
We confirm the return with you by phone, and your vet's view carries the most weight
We confirm what Dogtown needs before a dog rejoins its group when you call, rather than publishing one rule here, because the right answer depends on what your vet found. Have three things ready for that call: the date the cough stopped, what your vet said, and any medication your dog took. A short written note from your vet saying your dog has recovered carries all three at once, so ask for one at the recheck.
Plan the first week back gently. A dog that has spent weeks resting has lost some fitness, and the Merck Veterinary Manual notes that stress can bring on a relapse while a dog is convalescing. Book a half day at $33 before a full day at $42, start with one or two days rather than your usual number, and read the report card in the Dogtown app for energy and appetite. If the cough returns at any point, stop and call your vet.

Outbreaks
When several dogs cough, a daycare separates, cleans, ventilates and tells owners
A careful facility responds to a cluster of coughs along the lines the science suggests. The Merck manual's control advice is that dogs with kennel cough should be housed apart from other dogs, with good hygiene, and it notes that extremes of ventilation, temperature and humidity raise susceptibility. The AVMA adds that some of the organisms survive in the environment for weeks, so toys, bedding and bowls matter as much as the dogs.
What Dogtown does in a week like that, and how we would tell you, is a question to ask us directly; we answer it at the evaluation and on the phone, and you should put the same question to any daycare. A complete answer covers four things: how a dog that starts coughing during the day is separated, how shared bowls, toys and surfaces are handled, how owners whose dogs shared a group are told, and what a dog needs before it comes back.
- How is a dog that starts coughing separated during the day?
- How are water bowls, toys and bedding handled afterward?
- How are owners in the same group told, and how quickly?
- What does a dog need before it returns?

One mild case is part of group life; repeated cases deserve a conversation with your vet
A single mild cough does not mean daycare is wrong for your dog. Kennel cough spreads wherever dogs share air and objects, and the AVMA notes that most dogs are contagious before they show any signs, so it can be picked up wherever dogs gather, from training classes and dog shows to the veterinary hospital, as well as at daycare. Most mild cases recover fully, and a healthy, social dog usually goes back to its group and its friends once the break is over.
Repeated cases are different. If your dog coughs again and again, ask your vet whether its vaccine schedule, a canine influenza vaccine or an underlying airway problem needs attention. Puppies and older dogs with other health problems carry a greater risk of severe disease, according to the AVMA, and for them a quieter routine may be wiser for a while: solo at-home walks by Dogtown staff, 20 minutes for $25 or 30 minutes for $35, with a photo and a note after each.
