Should I tip at a dog boarding facility?

Many owners reach the pick-up desk with a wallet half out and no idea whether to use it. This page covers what etiquette guidance does and does not say, who at a place like ours looks after your dog, how to find out how tips work here, and other ways to say thank you.

The short version

Optional, with no fixed custom for boarding, and always within your budget

Etiquette guidance on pet care is patchy. The Emily Post Institute's holiday tipping guide suggests up to the cost of one session, or a gift, for a groomer who sees your pet all year, and up to one week's pay, or a gift, for a dog walker. It has nothing to say about boarding kennels or overnight facilities, so anyone quoting a standard percentage for a boarding stay is offering an opinion rather than a rule.

The same guide makes two points that apply to any service. You should not feel obliged to go beyond your budget, and a tip or a gift should come with a short handwritten note. For businesses it also suggests a simple step when you are unsure: call the front desk and ask what the company accepts. That is the right first move at Dogtown too, before you are standing at the counter.

  • No published custom for boarding or overnight staff
  • Groomers and dog walkers: the only pet entries in the etiquette guide
  • Never beyond your budget
  • When unsure, ask the front desk what is accepted

Who looks after your dog

Several people care for an overnight guest, which is why the front desk is the place to ask

A stay at Dogtown is a team effort rather than one person's job. Handlers run the playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs that overnight guests join by day, the suites are monitored 24/7 at night, the front desk takes your notes and answers messages in the app, and if you add a bath or a full groom, a groomer finishes the stay in the studio. The Pup Van driver may collect and return your dog as well.

Because the work is shared, money handed to one person at pick-up may not reach the people who looked after your dog on the Tuesday night. Dogtown does not publish a tipping policy, so this page cannot tell you whether tips are accepted, shared or passed on. Ask the front desk at the counter or on 978 491-5922, and the answer will come from the people who run the building, not from a guess.

  1. 01

Decide whether you want to give anything, and keep it within your budget

  2. 02

Ask the front desk whether tips are accepted

  3. 03

Ask how a tip is shared between handlers, the desk and any groomer

  4. 04

    Add a short handwritten note

  5. 05

Or say thanks another way: a message in the app or an honest review

Already priced

The nightly rate and the bundles already pay for the care itself

Whatever you decide about a tip, the stay itself is priced in full. The suite is $78 a night and covers the daycare playgroups, daily exercise and 24/7 monitoring. The Dogtown Classic costs $10 more a night and brings a daily homemade pupsicle or puppy cup, plus 10 percent off grooming. Dogtown Deluxe costs $15 more and brings a gourmet stuffed Kong or Toppl, daily treadmill or enrichment play, an orthopedic memory-foam bed and 15 percent off grooming.

Extras for a dog that needs more are priced too. Enrichment add-ons run from a $5 lick mat to a $10 treadmill session, and a groom before pick-up is priced by size, with a $20 behavior or handling surcharge where a dog needs slower, more careful handling. None of these figures assumes a tip on top. A gratuity, if you choose to give one, is a personal thank-you rather than part of the bill.

Other ways to say thanks

A specific thank-you, a short note and an honest review are free ways to show appreciation

Not every thank-you needs cash. Tell the person at pick-up what you noticed: that your dog came home relaxed, finished every meal or trotted in without looking back. Send a message through the Dogtown app after the stay. A short handwritten card, which the etiquette guide recommends alongside any tip, also works perfectly well on its own. If the stay went well, an honest review helps other Cape Ann families who are choosing where their dog will sleep.

Practical help counts as well, because it makes the next stay smoother for everyone. Pre-portioned meals, medications with written instructions, current Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, a valid city dog license and a pick-up inside your window all save the team time that goes back to the dogs. On Sundays, overnight guests are collected between 8 and 10 AM or between 4 and 6 PM, and the building opens only for those windows.

  • Tell the desk at pick-up what went well
  • Send a message in the Dogtown app
  • Write a short card
  • Leave an honest review
  • Arrive organized and collect inside your window

Holidays and long stays

Long and holiday stays are when many owners think about giving something extra

Thanksgiving, the weeks around Christmas and the night of the July 3 fireworks in Gloucester are stays many owners want to mark. The same principles hold: stay within your budget, add a note, and ask the front desk first what is accepted. The etiquette guide adds that if you already tip at the time of service, you can skip a year-end tip or make the holiday thank-you more modest, which suits a dog that stays several times a year.

Regular guests have another way to show confidence in the team: booking the next stay as they leave. For families with a dog in daycare most days, the Unlimited Daycare Membership at $700 a month includes priority holiday overnight-stay reservations among its benefits. Either way, our overnight stays page lists what the nightly rate includes, so you know exactly what you have paid for before you decide on anything extra.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How much should I tip for dog boarding?
There is no published standard for boarding, and the Emily Post Institute's holiday guide does not list boarding staff. If you choose to tip, pick an amount you are comfortable with, add a short note, and first ask the Dogtown front desk whether tips are accepted and how they are shared. The $78 nightly rate already covers the care.
Do I tip after every stay or only at the holidays?
Either, or neither. The etiquette guide says that if you tip at the time of service, you may skip the year-end tip or give a more modest holiday thank-you. For a dog that stays a few nights a year, a card or a specific word at pick-up is a perfectly good way to show the stay went well.
Should I tip the groomer separately if my dog was bathed before pick-up?
The groom is its own service, priced by size, done by a groomer rather than the overnight handlers. Our answer on tipping the groomer covers that question in detail. As with the stay, ask the front desk how tips work before you reach the counter, and remember the Classic and Deluxe bundles already take 10 or 15 percent off the groom.
Will a tip get my dog better care?
It should not, and you should not need one. Every overnight guest gets a suite, the same playgroup matching by size and temperament and the same 24/7 monitoring at $78 a night. What helps a stay most is information: clear notes on food, medication and behavior, and an honest account of how your dog did last time.
Is it rude not to tip after a stay?
No. Tipping is optional, and etiquette guidance is clear that nobody should stretch past their budget. A sincere thank-you at pick-up, a message in the Dogtown app or an honest review all tell the team the stay went well. The price you paid is the full price of the stay.
