Grooming policy
Is there a cancellation fee for grooming?
Plans change, dogs get sick and nor'easters close roads. This page explains what the $10 fee covers and what it does not, and how to move a groom at 210 Eastern Ave without losing your place or your dog's coat schedule.
The fee
The fee is $10, and it applies when a grooming appointment is cancelled without notice
The line on our grooming menu is short: a $10 cancellation fee applies to grooming appointments cancelled without notice. It sits with the grooming add-ons, next to nail clipping and teeth brushing, and it is the only charge on the menu tied to timing. A missed appointment with no call at all is the plainest example of a cancellation without notice. A call or a message well before the slot is the opposite case, and the one to aim for.
What we do not publish is a set number of hours that counts as notice. Rather than guess, treat that as a reason to call early. The front desk can tell you, for your booking, whether a cancellation at that point carries the fee. Call 978 491-5922 during opening hours, Monday to Friday 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM or Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM, or send a message through the Dogtown app whenever your plans change.
- $10 for a grooming appointment cancelled without notice
- No published notice period: call or message as early as you can
- A no-show with no call is a cancellation without notice
- The front desk confirms how the fee applies to your booking
Why it exists
A groom holds a block of a groomer's day, and without notice that block cannot go to another dog
A grooming slot is not a seat in a waiting room. It is a block of time sized to your dog: a 20-pound bath is a short block, while a 100-pound full service with a long dry is a long one. When a booking is dropped with no warning, that time sits empty, because there is no way to offer it to another dog in the minutes before it starts. Notice is what lets the front desk give the block to an owner who called that morning hoping for a gap.
Set against the menu, the fee is small. Grooming runs from $55 for a small dog's bath to $120 for an extra-large full service, so $10 is a fraction of any appointment. Think of it as a nudge to make the call rather than a penalty you expect to pay. A message sent as soon as your plans change costs you nothing and helps another dog onto the table.
Move, do not cancel
Moving the appointment keeps your dog on its coat schedule, and the steps take a couple of minutes
Cancelling solves today's problem and creates a new one: a coat that misses its interval. Curly coats keep growing, double coats keep shedding, and a gap of a few extra weeks is how a tidy dog turns into a dematting job, billed at $15 per 20 minutes. So when something comes up, ask to move the groom instead of dropping it. Have two or three alternative days in mind before you call, and the conversation is over quickly.
Check open grooming times online or in the Dogtown app first, so you know what is available before you talk to anyone. Then call or message the front desk with your dog's name, the current slot and the times that suit you. Ask at the same time whether the change counts as a cancellation, and whether a $5 rebooking saving you took at your last pick-up moves with it; both answers come from the front desk, not from this page.

Good reasons
A sick dog, a storm or fresh stitches are all reasons to call, and the earlier the better
Some reasons to move a groom are about your dog. A dog that is vomiting, has diarrhea or is coughing belongs at home, and VCA advises immediate veterinary care when vomiting comes with lethargy or blood. A dog recovering from surgery should wait for the vet's all-clear before a bath, and our guide to daycare and grooming after surgery covers the timing. In each case, the moment you call your vet is a good moment to message us as well.
Other reasons belong to Cape Ann. A nor'easter in the National Weather Service forecast for Boston can make Route 128 and Eastern Ave a drive nobody should make for a bath, and a long holiday weekend can change family plans overnight. Check the forecast the day before, and if the drive looks doubtful, message us early rather than waiting to see how the morning looks. If the weather is the reason, say so when you get in touch.
- Vomiting, diarrhea or a cough: move the groom and call your vet
- Recent surgery: wait for the vet's all-clear
- A storm in the forecast: message the day before, not the morning of
- Any change of plans: call the moment you know
Other bookings
The $10 line is a grooming fee, so ask the front desk about daycare, overnight and cat terms
The published fee covers grooming. For daycare days, Academy days and overnight stays, the front desk confirms the current cancellation terms when you book, so ask then, particularly for holiday nights. If your dog's groom was booked inside a daycare day or before an overnight pick-up and the visit itself changes, ask how the groom is handled at the same time. One call can usually move both, and it saves you chasing two separate answers.
Cat appointments book through the same grooming calendar, from nail clipping at $20 to the Full Service at $120. If you have a cat booked and need to change it, the same advice holds: call or message early, and ask the front desk how the fee applies to your appointment. A cat that is unwell on the day is better rebooked than brought in; every cat is assessed before service, and a cat who cannot be groomed safely is referred to a vet.
