Doodle coats
How often should a goldendoodle be groomed?
Goldendoodle owners hear every interval from four weeks to twelve, and the spread exists because no two doodle coats are alike. The coat in front of you, not the breed name, sets the calendar. Here is how to read it, what each skipped week does to the next appointment, and how to keep the bill at the base rate.
Read the coat
Curly coats need the table every 4 to 6 weeks, wavy coats every 6 to 8
A goldendoodle's coat sits somewhere between its golden retriever and poodle parents. The tighter the curl, the more the hair behaves like a poodle's: it keeps growing, it sheds into itself rather than onto the floor, and it knots at the base. VCA's standard poodle profile says most owners have their poodles professionally clipped every six weeks, with brushing and combing every other day, and a curly doodle follows that pattern closely. That is why 4 to 6 weeks is the range that holds.
A wavy or loose coat is more forgiving. The hair still grows and still tangles where it rubs, but the open wave lets loose hair escape, so 6 to 8 weeks between full grooms suits most wavy doodles brushed several times a week. A flat, straight-coated doodle can stretch further, though its ears and leg feathering still need tidying. Not sure which you have? Look at the coat a few days after a bath: tight springs are curly, loose S-shapes are wavy.
- Curly, tight springs: full groom every 4 to 6 weeks
- Wavy, loose S-shapes: every 6 to 8 weeks
- Flat or straight: longer gaps, but ears and feathering still need trims
- Mixed textures: set the interval by the curliest part of the coat
Between visits
Brushing to the skin between grooms is what lets the interval hold
An interval only works if the coat arrives combable. VCA's coat-care guidance says long, silky and curly coats need daily brushing to stop tangles and mats, which form most often around the ears, in the armpits and along the backs of the legs. For a curly doodle that means a few minutes most days; for a wavy one, three or four proper sessions a week usually keep up. The test is a metal comb: if it slides from skin to tip everywhere, the coat is on schedule.
Our guide to brushing a doodle between grooms walks through line brushing, the method that reaches the base of the hair. Two habits matter as much as the tool. Brush before any bath, never after, because VCA warns that tangles can become impossible to remove once wet. And dry a wet doodle all the way to the skin after a swim or a rainy walk. Between full grooms, a $10 face trim keeps the eyes clear.
The cost of skipping
A skipped cycle costs de-matting time, a shorter cut, or both
Skipping one appointment rarely saves the price of one groom; you pay later for what grew in the gap. At Dogtown the base price is set by weight, so a 40-pound doodle in good coat pays $85 for a full service and a 65-pound doodle pays $110. When the comb stops at a knot, de-matting is added at $15 per 20 minutes, and the groomer confirms the figure with you at check-in, before any work starts, after assessing the coat.
The other cost is length. A coat that has felted against the skin cannot be scissored into the teddy-bear shape in your photo, so the kinder choice is often a short clip beneath the mats and a fresh start. That is not a penalty; the coat decided. Rebook at pick-up and $5 comes off the next appointment, which is the simplest way to stop a six-week plan from drifting to ten weeks.
| Coat and gap | Usual picture at check-in | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Curly coat, groomed every 4 to 6 weeks | Comb passes to the skin; cut as planned | Full service by size, $75 to $120 |
| Curly coat, one cycle skipped | Knots behind the ears, in the armpits, at the collar | De-matting at $15 per 20 minutes |
| Wavy coat, groomed every 6 to 8 weeks | Light tangles worked out in the brush-out | Usually just the base price |
| Wavy coat, two cycles skipped | Felting along the legs and harness lines | De-matting time or a shorter clip |
| Any coat, months since the last groom | Coat felted close to the skin | A short clip under the mats, agreed at check-in |
Finding the right gap
The first two grooms show whether the interval suits your doodle
Grooming needs no evaluation, so the first step is booking a full service online, in the Dogtown app or by phone in your doodle's weight band: $75 up to 25 pounds, $85 for 26 to 50, $110 for 51 to 90 and $120 over 90. At check-in, tell the groomer when the last cut was, how often you brush and the length you want, and bring a photo. Ask what interval the groomer would suggest for this particular coat.
The second appointment is the test. If the comb passes cleanly and the cut grew out evenly, keep the interval. If the groomer found knots behind the ears or under the harness, bring the next date forward by a week or two and keep brushing those spots daily. Rebooking at pick-up holds the date before the calendar fills with other plans.

The Cape Ann calendar
Shorten the gap in beach season and tick season, when the coat works hardest
Salt water and sand are hard on a doodle coat. At the time of writing Gloucester allows dogs at Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30 and at Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31, and a doodle that swims through those months should move toward the short end of its range. Rinse with fresh water and dry to the skin the same day, because a damp coat felts within days.
Tick season on Cape Ann runs roughly April to November, and a dense doodle coat hides ticks well, so a shorter summer cut makes the nightly check quicker. If the drive to Eastern Ave is what makes appointments slip, a groom can ride along with a daycare day for dogs who have done the free evaluation, and the Pup Van collects and returns daycare dogs for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.
- Off-season beach swimmers: the short end of the range
- Fresh-water rinse and a full dry after every swim
- Tick season, April to November: a shorter cut speeds the check
- Busy weeks: put the groom on a daycare day
