Adolescent training
Adolescent dog training in Gloucester, MA: Calm & Connected
The puppy who sat on cue at five months is often the eight-month-old who looks straight through you, and research suggests that is a phase rather than a failure. This page explains what is going on in the teenage months, what Calm & Connected works on, what it costs, and when a different program is the better buy.
Who it is for
Calm & Connected is for the 6-to-18-month dog whose manners slipped as it grew
The program is built for the dog who learned its basics and then seemed to lose them. A 2020 study in Biology Letters that followed young dogs through adolescence found that responses to the sit cue dipped at 8 months compared with 5 and 12 months, and only when the dog's own carer gave the cue; responses to a stranger did not fall. The authors called it a passing phase, and it fits what owners describe: a dog who needs structure, not more freedom, to come through it.
Three kinds of teenager arrive most often. The dog in its second fear period, which the AKC places between about 6 and 14 months, who suddenly balks at a bin or a stranger it passed calmly last month. The hormonal adolescent with a new interest in other dogs, scent marking and the far end of every field. And the big young dog whose pulling and jumping have become a safety problem rather than a nuisance. Calm & Connected also takes new rescues and adult dogs of any age.
It is not the right program for every adolescent. A dog who lunges and barks at other dogs from across the street needs trigger work in Focus & Flow or React Less, Relax More. Guarding food or toys, or unpredictable high arousal, is a Polished Pup case. And a teenager whose manners are fine but whose energy is not needs exercise more than training: two daycare days at $42 each, or a Dogtown Academy day, will often do.
- Recall, focus and leash manners that faded between 6 and 18 months
- A second fear period: sudden worries about objects, people or places
- Pulling, jumping and grabbing that are now a strength problem
- Not for strong dog reactivity or guarding: Level 3 programs instead
How it runs
Four, six or eight weeks: a reset, then impulse control, then the real world
Every block runs two sessions a week, and the work moves through three stages whatever the length. The first is a reset: engagement, name response and a settle on a mat, rebuilt in a quiet indoor space so the dog remembers that paying attention to you pays. The second is impulse control, the core of adolescent training: waiting at doors and bowls, leaving things on cue, holding a position while something exciting happens nearby, and walking on a loose leash past distractions.
The third stage is real-world reliability, practiced outside the building and with people your dog has not met: polite greetings, calm handling of paws and collar, and cues that hold when the setting changes. A dog in a fear period is never pushed through a fright; the AKC's advice for that stage is to let the dog choose how close to get and to reward curiosity, and Gabby builds sessions the same way.

Price and booking
Calm & Connected is priced per session from $94, so the block length sets the total
Training at Dogtown starts from $94 per session, and Calm & Connected runs 8, 12 or 16 sessions. We do not publish a program price, because the assessment decides the length; Gabby confirms the plan and the investment before you commit. Send the training form on our contact page and we reply within one hour on business days. Bring vaccination records to the first session, and tell us about anything that worries you, from a growl over a bone to a near miss at the front door.
The table sets Calm & Connected beside the other routes an adolescent might take. Dogtown Academy is the one with a published day price, because it is structured daycare rather than a program: a full day is $89 and a half day $69, and every Academy day includes a training session with our trainer. Pairing Calm & Connected with one Academy day a week keeps the cues in practice on the days everyone is at work.
| Option | Length | Price | Best for |

Campus or sessions
Choose Canine Campus when nobody at home can practice twice a week
Calm & Connected depends on you doing the homework, so it suits a household with someone around to practice a few minutes a day. When both adults work long hours, Canine Campus is usually the better fit. Your dog comes to us for training and adventure days and sleeps at home; Dean's List, 4 weeks and about 20 sessions, covers leash skills, impulse control, obedience, confidence, neutrality, household manners and mild-to-moderate reactivity, with pick-up and drop-off, daily reports, homework and an end-of-program lesson for you.
For a family going away, the Advanced board and train is two weeks with real-world outings, distraction proofing, structured socialization and two scheduled go-home coaching lessons. All three routes are led by Gabriella Pope, Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, who holds a B.S. in Biochemistry and has ten-plus years of hands-on experience with behaviorally complex dogs. Her method is relationship-based and fear- and force-free, and it looks for the why of a behavior, whether fear, frustration or sensitivity, before choosing what to teach. Daycare, the Academy and training share one building, so an adolescent can later join a playgroup of 7 to 10 if the free evaluation says it is ready.
- Someone home to practice daily: Calm & Connected
- Two working adults: Canine Campus, Dean's List
- A family trip coming up: the two-week Advanced board and train
- An intact adolescent: playgroup placement confirmed at the evaluation
Getting here
Sessions run at 210 Eastern Ave; the off-season beaches are the final exam
Dogtown is at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, open Monday to Friday 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM, and training sessions are scheduled inside those hours. Academy and Campus days use the drop-off windows, weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and the Pup Van collects dogs for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea.
The places a Cape Ann teenager gets tested are seasonal. From October 1, Gloucester lets dogs run off leash on Good Harbor on even-numbered days and on Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days, at the time of writing, and a nine-month-old should meet that sand on a long line until its recall holds. The fenced Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort does not admit unaltered males or females in heat, which matters for an intact adolescent.
